✍️ TASK 2: These days, young people prefer to spend their leisure time in shopping centers instead of doing organized activities, such as sports or music. Do you think it is a negative or positive development?

Modern shopping centers have become community hubs for an increasing number of young people who spend their spare time in such facilities instead of engaging in organized activities such as sports or music. Although shopping malls are ideal venues for social interaction, I would argue that this trend has largely been a negative development, as structured leisure-time activities are far too important to be simply overlooked.

With the development of urban areas, infrastructure has drastically changed in many cities, especially owing to the construction of leisure facilities such as shopping centers. Unlike previous generations, young people prefer to get together with their peers and others in shopping malls, where they can socialize with one another. This trend is especially prevalent in countries where summers are normally hotter than usual, enhancing the appeal of shopping centers for the younger generation, wherein individuals can spend quality time with like-minded people. On top of this, such facilities offer a wide range of entertainment options, ranging from arcade rooms to dining outlets and clothing stores, all of which attract young people to shopping centers.

These benefits notwithstanding, I believe that the significance of structured activities cannot be simply dismissed as a secondary consideration. Sports activities have always been popular among young individuals, whether for leisure or health purposes, thereby ensuring that these individuals participate in meaningful activities rather than staying inactive. Since a healthy mind often goes hand in hand with physical fitness, young people’s academic performance can hinge on how often they participate in organized sports games, which have partially been replaced by entertainment options present in shopping malls. Without sporting activities, public health, particularly among younger generations, would likely deteriorate in the long run, which is not in the best interest of both guardians and the state.

Beyond the importance of sports in youngsters’ lives, music, among many organized activities, has the capacity to stimulate their creativity. In an era where transferable skills such as creative thinking, problem-solving, and communication have become indispensable parts of employers’ expectations for prospective applicants, it is unreasonable for young people to take organized activities for granted. Although quality time spent in shopping malls helps individuals become more sociable and better equipped to navigate social situations, these young people need a broader repertoire of personal characteristics that can primarily be acquired through structured pastimes. For these reasons alone, the public must be aware of potential risks posed by shopping centers – modern community hubs that can do more harm than good.

In conclusion, while shopping centers provide young people with opportunities for social interaction and entertainment, I believe their growing preference for such venues over organized activities is largely a negative development. This is because structured pastimes, particularly sports and music, play a far more significant role in promoting physical well-being and developing essential personal skills.

Some people say a good diet and regular exercise are not necessary for a long and healthy life. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There are varying opinions with regards to what contributes to a long and healthy life, with some disregarding the importance of a good diet and regular exercise. I firmly disagree with this opinion, as healthy dietary choices and consistent exercise are the main contributing factors to longevity. However, these two should be complemented by good mental health, which is equally crucial, if not more so.

As the old saying goes “you are what you eat”, the relevance of this conviction is still present, as poor dietary habits can take a toll on public health. Studies have shown that wholesome foods can prevent the development of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, all of which stem from modern eating choices. Take the strong link between rising obesity levels and unhealthy meals in the US as an example, which has been suggested by the World Health Organization, thereby making it essential to promote healthier food consumption.

Beyond one’s eating habits, it is crucial to take regular exercise into serious consideration, too. It is no secret that consistent exercise routines can help maintain healthy bodily functions, particularly as people age, primarily because of the fact that constant movement can improve blood circulation and metabolism. Consider the example of walking 10,000 steps daily, which can be completed regardless of one’s physical fitness, as it is beginner-friendly. In a world where a sedentary lifestyle has become common, it is imperative for individuals, especially those with office jobs, to engage in physical activity in one form or another.

In my view, it would be overly premature to claim that a good diet combined with regular exercise is the sole factor contributing to longevity, as one’s mental health is as vital. Even individuals whose dietary habits and exercise levels meet WHO standards cannot be entirely healthy unless their mental well-being is maintained. If one experiences chronic mental health issues, including stress, depression, and distress, owing to their toxic relationships or home life, they are unlikely to have a long and healthy life. Therefore, the combination of a good diet, regular exercise, and mental well-being is the key to increasing longevity.

In conclusion, while informed dietary choices and regular exercise are indeed important to live a longer and healthier life, the significance of mental health cannot be overlooked, as in the presence of excessive stress, a good diet and exercise do not necessarily contribute to longevity.
