The table presents data on two different age groups (under 18 and over 60), the average income per person, and the percentage of the population living below the poverty line in three regions of the United States: California, Utah, and Florida.

Overall, Utah has the highest proportion of individuals aged 18 and under, whereas Florida accounts for the largest share of seniors over 60. Notably, despite having the lowest income per person, Utah has the smallest proportion of people living below the poverty line.

In detail, Utah has a strikingly high proportion of young people, with those under 18 making up 28% of its population. Following this, California’s youth share is recorded at 17%, closely trailed by Florida, at 16%. Regarding the older population aged 60 and over, a contrasting trend is observed, with Florida being home to a significant 23% of seniors. Conversely, California reports a slightly higher share at 13%, while Utah lags behind with just 8%.

From a socio-economic perspective, it is evident that a higher average income does not necessarily translate into a lower percentage of people living below the poverty line. Specifically, while the average income per person in Utah is $17,000, only 9% of its population falls below the poverty line. Likewise, Florida and California report average incomes of $22,000 and $23,000, with 12% and 16% of their populations, respectively, living in poverty.

Some people think that when recruiting, companies should aim to take on people who are innovative and able to work independently while others consider they should recruit people who are able to work in a team and follow instructions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

People have different views on whether companies should hire employees based on their creativity and the ability to work independently or prioritize personal skills such as teamwork and adherence to rules. While there are clear benefits to emphasizing individual achievements in recruitment, I believe it is more important for companies to select potential candidates who can work effectively as part of a team and follow established guidelines.

Proponents of prioritizing independence and innovation in hiring practices cite various reasons to support their stance. When companies recruit individuals who can work autonomously and creatively, they are likely to reduce managerial burden and unnecessary staff meetings, thereby fostering a culture of independence among employees. Such improvements in the work environment can mitigate the risk of mismanagement, not only making employees more comfortable but also boosting productivity and efficiency. In a world where many people suffer from work-related stress and burnout due to overwhelming deadlines and rigid instructions, prioritizing autonomy and creativity in recruitment procedures could help alleviate existing issues in the modern workplace.

However, in my opinion, teamwork and compliance with company bylaws should be the top priority when it comes to hiring standards. With the rise of modern technological advancements, increasing competition, innovative business strategies, and evolving corporate cultures, it is essential for hiring committees to make decisions that align with contemporary workplace demands. Given the instability of today’s job market, finding young professionals who can collaborate effectively and follow clear instructions is already challenging, let alone retain them. Gone are the days when businesses could thrive solely on independent and creative workers; today’s complex work standards, coupled with growing corporate competition, have created an environment where teamwork and conformity to set rules determine a company’s success or downfall.

In conclusion, while creativity and independence have their merits, I am of the opinion that teamwork and adherence to company rules should take precedence in recruitment decisions. Given the demands of the modern workplace, selecting employees who can work effectively as part of a team and align with organizational goals is crucial for long-term success.

Some people believe that young people should choose the jobs that they want, but other people think they should be more realistic and think more about their future. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People have differing views as to whether young people should follow their instincts when choosing a job or adopt a more realistic mindset by focusing on their future career prospects. While there are clear benefits to pursuing a profession one is passionate about, I believe this is not the best course of action given the demands of today’s job market, which necessitate a more pragmatic approach to career choices.

Some people advocate for the freedom of choice when it comes to young people’s career decisions, thereby arguing that they should be able to pursue a profession of their interest. When one opts for a field, they have a striking liking for, such as education, medicine, or law, they are more likely to secure a permanent job and build a successful career rather than frequently changing professions like those who are forced into a certain sphere. Although money can be a strong motivating factor in employment choices, passion should, in some cases, take precedence, as monetary rewards are not the top priority for everyone – some value personal fulfillment more. A clear example of this is the prominent tech CEO, Elon Musk, who was fascinated by technology and science from an early age and founded corporations big enough to be listed alongside Fortune 500 companies. However, it is also worth mentioning that he was born into money, and thus had generational wealth, which could have contributed to his success to some extent. This suggests that while passion can drive success, external factors such as financial stability and opportunities also play a crucial role in shaping one’s career trajectory.

In my view, however, young people should have a more practical outlook on their employment prospects with regard to success. While having the freedom to choose a career path can foster the passion to succeed, motivation to persevere, and opportunities to learn from failures, a more reliable approach is needed in today’s modern world, where professional stability is more crucial than ever. This means that if one goes bankrupt or loses their job, there are negative ramifications not only for them but also to their dependents, such as family members or aging parents, making a more sensible career choice essential. Consider a young entrepreneur who starts a business out of passion but lacks financial backing. If the startup fails, they may struggle to recover financially, impacting both themselves and their families in the long run. On the other hand, someone who pursues a stable career, such as a software engineer in a reputable company, is more likely to achieve long-term financial security, which highlights the importance of pragmatism over personal interest.

Having explored the topic from both ends of the spectrum, I still believe that career choices, when viewed through a more realistic lens, guarantee long-term success and contribute to the overall well-being. That said, the benefits opting for a job predicated on one’s interests cannot be overlooked.

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement.

Given the instability of today’s economic climate, it has become harder for us to make a living and sustain an adequate lifestyle. Thus, some have argued that everyone, including the younger generation, should make investments for the future. I fully agree with this statement, as saving money for the future can help prevent unwanted financial instability and act as a safety net during times of economic turmoil.

One key reason why everyone, especially young people, should start building financial reserves is to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances. These may include job loss, medical emergencies, or unexpected large expenses, all of which can lead to financial hardship if no backup resources are available. However, individuals who invest in real estate or build an emergency fund are better equipped to handle such uncertainties and can manage difficult situations more effectively.
A clear example of this is the 2009 U.S. economic downturn, during which millions, if not billions of average working-class individuals lost their jobs, homes, and livelihoods, underscoring the importance of having a financial safety net.

Another major factor is financial independence and long-term monetary benefits. While some may argue that one should live life to the fullest by spending money impulsively, it is essential to take a more practical approach to financial management. Investments, particularly those that benefit from compound interest, enable individuals to grow their wealth exponentially over time, which leads to the accumulation of wealth.
Studies have shown that individuals who begin saving and investing in their 20s tend to accumulate more money than those who start later, even with smaller initial contributions. Only through achieving financial freedom can one pursue career changes, start businesses, or retire early, highlighting the necessity of making wise investments from a young age.

In conclusion, considering the volatility of the modern economy, it is crucial for individuals, including the younger generation, to focus on their future and start saving money as a means of securing financial stability. This can provide protection against unexpected financial downturns and ensure the stability of one’s personal budget in the future.

February 11 CDI Task 2 ⬇️

In some countries, it is now possible for people to buy a wide variety of foods transported from all over the world. To what extent do the benefits of this development outweigh the drawbacks.

The rise of transportation and logistics has driven the globalization of food, leading to changes in dietary habits and economies while making a diverse range of food products accessible worldwide. While this phenomenon has enhanced food availability and created opportunities for a stable food supply, I believe its drawbacks outweigh these benefits, particularly in terms of cultural erosion and public health issues.

One key positive implication of food globalization for consumers is the increased availability of diverse food products, which allows them to enjoy cuisines from different cultures without geographical limitations. This accessibility has enriched culinary experiences and broadened consumers’ palates in a way that may not have been possible in previous centuries. A clear example of this is sushi, which was once exclusive to Japan but is now widely available across the globe, even in regions where raw fish was not historically consumed.

Besides this, it has played a crucial role in food security, as countries experiencing shortages can rely on imports to meet demand. For instance, nations with harsh climates can access fresh produce year-round, reducing the risk of food scarcity. This interconnected food system can ensure stable access to essential food supplies on a global scale.

Notwithstanding these merits, global interconnectedness also threatens local food traditions. As international brands dominate markets, traditional cuisines often take a backseat, leading to the decline of indigenous food practices. Take, for example, my home country – Uzbekistan – where many people, especially younger generations, are opting to dine at popular fast-food chains, such as KFC, Wendy’s, or Pizza Hut. As a result, younger people, influenced by these establishments and mass-produced meals, may gradually lose touch with their culinary heritage. This shift in food habits not only impacts cultural identity but also affects overall public health, as processed foods high in sugar and saturated fats replace traditional, nutrient-rich diets. In fact, in the United States, the widespread consumption of unhealthy products like sugary beverages and pre-packaged snacks has contributed to rising obesity rates, with nearly half of adults classified as obese.

In conclusion, while the globalization of a variety of food items brings some benefits, such as the greater supply of food products and improved food security, I remain convinced that there are more negatives, chiefly the loss of traditional food culture and unwanted health outcomes.

You aren't gonna believe what happened earlier this morning. Long story short, I was minding my own business, you know, doing what I like on my time — watching rap battles and breaking down 'cool collocations', and out of nowhere, Chat GPT started suggesting sample answers for part 2 cue cards. Of course, she insisted using the vocabulary I have been trying to learn over the last few weeks, I'd say.

Here is what happened later:

Describe a job you would like to do in the future.
You should say:

what the job is

what skills or qualifications you would need

why you would like to do this job and explain why it would be a good choice for you.

To be honest, one job I’ve always dreamed of doing is becoming a creative director for a design agency. It’s a role that allows a lot of freedom to express ideas, while also leading a team of people. Of course, to land a job like that, I’d need a solid portfolio, excellent communication skills, and probably years of experience under my belt.

What appeals to me most is the opportunity to think outside the box and create campaigns that leave a lasting impression. I’ve always loved brainstorming and working with visuals, so this would definitely be right up my alley.

It’s not an easy path though — I’d probably have to start at the bottom and work my way up, but I’m okay with that. I believe if you’re passionate and willing to go the extra mile, success will come sooner or later. Plus, I’m a night owl, so I wouldn’t mind burning the midnight oil to finish a big project.

All in all, I think this job would be a perfect blend of creativity and leadership, and more importantly, it wouldn’t feel like work. As they say, do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.

✍️ Idioms Used:

under my belt = experience or achievement gained

think outside the box = think creatively

right up my alley = well-suited to my interests or skills

start at the bottom and work my way up = begin in a low position and get promoted

go the extra mile = put in extra effort

burning the midnight oil = working late

do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life = enjoy your job so much it doesn’t feel like work

My main takeaway from this unexpected 'incident' is — if you are not using online AI platforms to prep for your exam, then there is something wrong with you. I'd probably say that it is a crime against nature not to do so.

Many young people's choice of future jobs is based on salary. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? ⬇️

In recent times, materialism has become an integral part of people’s lives, causing many to equate material wealth with success. This shift has significantly influenced the way individuals choose their careers, with financial gain now often outweighing other important factors. I feel that a greater monetary reward for work is, in fact, the most crucial consideration, especially in the 21st century, despite its drawbacks.

One key advantage of working in a high-paying job is financial independence, which allows individuals to easily cover their bills, pay rent, and maintain a savings account for emergencies. Without financial concerns, they can devote more time and energy to their work, thereby improving focus and productivity, which benefits both employees and companies’ well-being. This also enhances employee retention rates as financial security reduces the likelihood of talent poaching by competing companies. Furthermore, a salary-oriented mindset helps workers to keep motivated and incentivized. Studies show that individuals with higher earnings tend to work harder, stay ahead of schedule, and remain in the office longer than their lower-paid counterparts, highlighting the importance of choosing jobs that offer greater monetary compensation. If the financial needs are not met, it is likely to result in dissatisfaction among the workforce and foster resentment towards higher-ups. Therefore, financial compensation should be considered a top priority when choosing a career.

This preference, however, may bring about its own set of problems. While money can act as a motivating factor and satisfaction tool for many individuals, it can also take its toll on their mental health, leading to depression, stress, and poor work-life balance. Because lucrative jobs often require long hours, high pressure, and complete dedication to the field, which may not be suitable for everyone. Some individuals may want to have a simple lifestyle with an average income, while working in positions that align with their personal interests and agendas.

Having considered this trend from both ends of the spectrum, I believe that a greater financial reward is certainly the most vital employment aspect to consider, as it can provide financial security, a source of motivation and job satisfaction. This choice, in turn, can have repercussions on employees’ mental well-being, which makes it a less appropriate option for those prioritizing balance.

Speaking Part 3 Tip ✅

Do you think people communicate differently in person compared to online? How so?

I guess there is a mountain of difference between how people communicate when meeting with each other physically and also online. When we do meet in person, we tend to show more emotion, to be more precise, because we hand gesture, we make eye contact, and sometimes we even touch each other. But when it comes to online communication method, I would like to think that it is a bit different because online we cannot know for sure the exact tone of the speech, especially if it's written in context. We have no idea what the other person is trying to say, for example, in text messages, so I would say these two ways of communication are vastly different. (band 8.0/8.5 / my answer)

I think there’s a huge difference between communicating face-to-face and online. In person, we show a lot more emotion, things like hand gestures, eye contact, and even physical touch. You can get a much clearer sense of what someone’s feeling. But online, it’s harder to read the tone, especially when it’s just text. You might misinterpret what someone means, because without facial expressions or body language, it’s harder to tell if they’re being serious or joking. So, I’d say the two ways of communicating are pretty different. (band 9.0 / native speaker answer)

➡️ Now, my conclusion is, I am supposed to be more casual instead of trying to sound like a professor from Harvard. See how a native speaker can use casual expressions like 'read the tone, get a much clearer sense of, there is a huge difference, and harder to tell'. There is a thin line between 8.0, 8.5 and 9.0 in speaking, but I won't stop until I crack it, while wishing patience to my AI friend. I could have done better if I was not feeling worn, I mean, for Pete's sake, it is 3:22 in the morning, so I better get a well-deserved shut-eye.
