🌌 April 12 — International Day of Human Space Flight / Cosmonautics Day
On this day in 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space!
At 27 years old, he launched aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1 from Baikonur Cosmodrome. He orbited the Earth once in just 108 minutes and safely returned, opening the era of human space exploration.
His famous words before launch: “Poyekhali!” (“Let’s go!”)
In Russia and many post-Soviet countries, this day is celebrated as Cosmonautics Day (День космонавтики). In 2011, the United Nations officially declared April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight to honor this historic achievement and promote peaceful space exploration for all humanity.
Today we celebrate not only Gagarin’s courage, but also all scientists, engineers, and astronauts who continue to push the boundaries of our knowledge about the Universe. 🚀
Fun fact: Exactly 20 years later, on April 12, 1981, the first Space Shuttle (Columbia) was launched!

Last week I had a little flashback to my university teaching days 😄

For several years, I worked at a university in Saint Petersburg. I taught Russian to international students from many different countries. Some of them studied physics and mathematics, so sometimes I even had to remember formulas and solve simple problems myself 😅

Recently, my former colleague invited me to join her students on a trip to the Hermitage Museum.

The Hermitage was always the first place I showed my students in Saint Petersburg. In my opinion, if you visit this city, you should definitely see the Hermitage. It is one of the most famous museums in Russia and an important part of world culture.

We walked through the museum, talked about art, and spent time together. It reminded me how much I miss meeting students in person. Online lessons are great, but real-life communication feels very special.

I was very happy to visit the Hermitage again 🤍

Have you ever been to the Hermitage? What would you most like to see in Saint Petersburg?
