In Russia, Easter is one of the most important Orthodox Christian holidays. It is celebrated according to the Julian calendar, so it often falls on a different date than Western European Easter.
Before Easter, people observe a long period of fasting (Great Lent). On the night of Easter, many go to church for a special midnight service with candles and prayers. After the service, families bring baskets with food such as kulich (Easter cake), dyed eggs, and cheese desserts to be blessed by a priest.
At home, people greet each other with “Christ is risen!” and answer “Indeed He is risen!” and finally break the fast with a festive meal. The atmosphere is very joyful, bright, and symbolic of renewal and new life.

🌌 April 12 — International Day of Human Space Flight / Cosmonautics Day
On this day in 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space!
At 27 years old, he launched aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1 from Baikonur Cosmodrome. He orbited the Earth once in just 108 minutes and safely returned, opening the era of human space exploration.
His famous words before launch: “Poyekhali!” (“Let’s go!”)
In Russia and many post-Soviet countries, this day is celebrated as Cosmonautics Day (День космонавтики). In 2011, the United Nations officially declared April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight to honor this historic achievement and promote peaceful space exploration for all humanity.
Today we celebrate not only Gagarin’s courage, but also all scientists, engineers, and astronauts who continue to push the boundaries of our knowledge about the Universe. 🚀
Fun fact: Exactly 20 years later, on April 12, 1981, the first Space Shuttle (Columbia) was launched!
