How Soviet soldiers fought the Nazis onโฆ aerosleds
The aerosled became one of the most unusual weapons used by the Red Army during World War II. This propeller-driven vehicle darted across the snow on skis, burying infantry and vehicles in their wake.
The lightly protected aerosled was equipped with only a single 7.62-mm machine gun, but it was sufficient for reconnaissance and patrols, guarding important military installations and even daring raids behind enemy lines. It also carried out resupply missions and helped to evacuate the wounded.
The aerosled was not bound to roads that could be controlled by the enemy. On the other hand, its speed dropped significantly on rough terrain and propeller-driven vehicles often made it impossible to navigate narrow paths and bushes.
Aerosled units fought in many sectors of the front, including the Arctic, Leningrad and Stalingrad. Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky recalled how, during a counteroffensive near Moscow, an aerosled company routed a German ski detachment that had penetrated the Soviet rear:
"The company immediately advanced to the area occupied by German skiers, deployed and attacked on the move, firing from its collective 14 machine guns. The Germans were scattered and annihilated. Only those who managed to reach the bushes at the edge of the forest survived.
Prisoners captured in this skirmish unanimously said that the attack stunned them: they mistook the aerosleds for tanks and were amazed at how the vehicles seemed to fly through the deep snow."

Why do they say, "โShchiโ soup & porridge โ thatโs our food"?
In 1853, Vladimir Dal, a Russian dictionary compiler, published a collection of Russian proverbs. One of them read as follows: "ะฉะธ ะดะฐ ะบะฐัะฐ โ ะฟะธัะฐ ะฝะฐัะฐ" ("Shchi da kasha โ pishcha nasha").
According to one version, distinguished military leader Alexander Suvorov used these words to encourage his soldiers during mealtime. However, the proverb most likely arose much earlier, as it describes a typical peasant menu.
Cabbage, potatoes, legumes and grains โ these were the typical ingredients used to make soups, stews and porridges. Meat, however, was too expensive for peasants, so it was rarely prepared โ only on holidays and between fasts, when they were allowed to eat meat.
