☦️ Today, July 28, Russia celebrates the Baptism of Rus’ Day
On this day, we mark 1,038 years since the adoption of Christianity in Rus’ and its proclamation as the state religion. It is also the day when the memory of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir is venerated.
📃 The Primary Chronicle notes that this turning point took place in ancient Chersonesus, which the Slavs called Korsun, a major Byzantine stronghold in Crimea. It is symbolic that this ancient polis served as a refuge for the first followers of Christianity as early as the first century. Today, without exaggeration, the city is one of the “jewels” on the map of Russia.
Although 988 is officially recognised as the year Christianity was adopted as the state religion of Ancient Rus’, it had begun to take root even earlier. Instances of turning to Christianity were recorded as early as the 860s, and in 957, Princess Olga, Prince Vladimir’s grandmother, was baptised in Constantinople.
💬 President of Russia, Vladimir Putin:
(from the President’s remarks at the celebration of the 1030th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus’, July 28, 2018)
❗️The adoption of Christianity marked a turning point not only in the religious but also in the political life of Ancient Rus’. It helped establish closer ties with the Christian world.
💬 Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
(from the briefing by Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, July 27, 2026)
⛪️ In the XIX century, the St. Vladimir Cathedral, one of the architectural landmarks of Sevastopol, was built on the site of Prince Vladimir’s baptism.

The Baptism of Rus’ gave its people true moral and spiritual guidance. <...> This greatest spiritual heritage is beyond the grasp of time. It is our sacred duty to preserve and strengthen it for future generations.

💬 Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
A number of Russian and foreign philosophers see Prince Vladimir’s decision as a truly civilizational choice, describing it as a “turn from pagan barbarism toward Europe”, toward the Europe which, in its best manifestation, we came to know for a long period of time. That is why it is especially painful to watch those who, in our day, in the Old World, are quite literally destroying Christianity and the Christian faith.

▪️Boris Eselevich passed away on July 25.
🇷🇺 Consul General of Russia in Toronto Vladlen Epifanov participated in the farewell ceremony. He expressed deep condolences to the family and loved ones of Boris Eselevich and noted his significant contribution to preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War, the feat of the residents of besieged Leningrad, and the generation of victors.
***
Boris Gurevich was born on December 30, 1932, in Leningrad.
He grew up in a large and close-knit family. But on June 22, 1941, war broke into the life of the eight-year-old boy, followed by all the horrors of the Siege of Leningrad: relentless bombings, hunger, cold, and a daily struggle for survival. In January 1942, Boris Eselevich’s grandfather died of starvation; in February, his grandmother passed away. Boris and his mother themselves could barely get up. They were saved from death by an acquaintance who had arrived from the front and shared his ration with them. They survived and endured all 872 days of the Siege of Leningrad.
After the war, Boris Eselevich finished school and began his working life as a railway car coupler on the October Railway. In 1953, he entered the Leningrad Mining Institute and, after graduating, went to work at a mine in the Urals. Upon returning to Leningrad, he worked for many years in tunnel construction. With his direct participation, unique tunnels were built in Leningrad, Moscow, Kaliningrad, Dnepropetrovsk, and Türkiye. His dedicated work was recognized with numerous medals, certificates of merit, and other awards.
🕯The Russian Embassy in Canada and the Consulate General of Russia in Toronto express their deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, friends, and all those who knew Boris Eselevich.
Memory Eternal!

🎙 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's interview with TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov (Moscow, July 29, 2026)
Key points:
• As for our “Western partners’” constant attempts to deceive Russia, our patience eventually runs out. It was no coincidence that, shortly after the start of the special military operation, President of Russia Vladimir Putin summed up our relations with the West and Europe by saying: “There is no going back to the way things were before February 2022”.
• The slogans of inflicting a “strategic defeat on our country”, of “decolonising Russia” have resurfaced in the West – once again, an explicit euphemism for breaking up our country. We see clearly what the West is plotting, and everyone needs to see this in order to understand that the situation is serious. President of Russia Vladimir Putin makes no secret of it. The entire self-proclaimed “civilised” world has risen against us.
• Now that Zelensky, while steadily retreating in Donbass and on other fronts, has turned in desperation to outright terrorist acts, and the West sees that many of his long-range weapons are reaching their targets, they have begun promoting this phase of the conflict as a “turning point” – as proof that “Ukrainian resolve can ultimately defeat Russia”.
• Russia is making daily progress on the front line – not as quickly as we might wish, but while preserving the lives of our servicemen. Ukraine (and its Western handlers) is trying to compensate for its failures on the battlefield by carrying out terrorist attacks aimed at disrupting the way of life people have grown accustomed to.
• I am very proud that our people understand the current situation correctly – as our history and those who defeated Nazism taught us. All the more so because today we are fighting the direct followers and descendants of those Nazis, with essentially the same forces aligned against us. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly says that Germany intends to become Europe’s leading power once again. If you are prepared to speak so openly, then be prepared for the consequences.
• Russia's national interests in foreign affairs are to remain a sovereign power and an independent civilisation, to ensure the reliable security of our borders and to make sure that no one even considers telling us how to organise life within Russia.
• Russia's principal national quality is something the West lacks. Our civilisation respects its ancestors – those who created it, built its cities and defeated its enemies.
• The West is now telling us that it will still decide when the time is right to resume negotiations. They envisage talks at one table involving Europe, the US, Zelensky and President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Before that, they insist on a truce and a ceasefire. The Western countries would then deploy multinational forces led by France and Britain and only afterwards sit down for talks. What does that mean? It is an ultimatum. The front line would be frozen, while the Nazi regime would remain in place.
• We must rely solely on ourselves, as our President has repeatedly stressed. The events unfolding now have grave consequences. But I want to reiterate: we are completing the work of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, who defeated Nazism – while our former allies allowed it to survive and take root once again.

🎙 Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev's address at the XII All-Russian Youth Educational Forum Territory of Meanings
(Solnechnogorsk, Moscow region, July 29, 2026)
💬 [...] Today I want to speak about something entirely different.
You know, we live in an extremely difficult time. That may sound commonplace, but it is true. This grave period has fallen to your lot, and you are young people. I will not even speak about us; we here are already quite grown-up people. In essence, our country is being tested for strength. It is being tested in every sense of the word.
From an economic point of view as well, because the number of sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation is beyond all limits. There is no other country in the world - and there has never been such a case in history - against which such a number of sanctions, around thirty thousand, has been introduced.
We feel political pressure from every direction, because our adversaries have always tried to destabilize our state, regardless, by the way, of what it was called - the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, or the present-day Russian Federation.
They do not like our country: large, strong, proud, self-sufficient, and impossible to command. There was a period when they apparently believed that they could, conditionally speaking, reach an arrangement with us, but in reality subordinate us to their will. I mean, first and foremost, Western countries. But they failed. And they are experiencing the bitterest disappointment.
That is why they are using every possible means, and now they are using Ukraine as a battering ram to destroy the Russian Federation. They do not conceal this. Therefore, I want to say in this hall, where different political forces are represented, where my colleagues who lead political parties are present, that we now have one common task. And it is obvious: to preserve our country.
❗️How can our country be preserved? It can be preserved in only one way: through victory in the special military operation.
And here, I am certain, the positions of all political parties, all responsible political forces, my comrades, my colleagues, and all of you absolutely coincide. [...] Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank my colleagues from other political parties for the fact that, during this difficult period, we are pursuing such a consolidated, common policy in the interests of all citizens of our country.
I am confident that today, when you speak with my colleagues, this theme will sound as a refrain. This does not mean that there should be no other questions, including difficult and acute ones. Politics consists of acute questions. But there are topics on which a nation, in order to preserve itself, must gather itself into a fist and take one common position. Only then shall we prevail.
I wish you, dear friends, esteemed young politicians, esteemed colleagues, interesting discussions. And I hope that after some time we will meet again to sum up the results of the elections to the State Duma.
But most importantly, we will meet in order to congratulate one another on victory, and it will be ours.

🌟 On July 30, 1942, the Rzhev–Sychyovka offensive operation (during the Battle of Rzhev) was launched by the Red Army to crush the 'Rzhev-Vyazma' salient and neutralise the main troops of the Nazi army group 'Centre' — Reich’s most formidable military force — and make it impossible for Wehrmacht to send part of those troops to Stalingrad and to the Caucasus.
Nazis made the Rzhev bridgehead a heavy fortified defence line to contain our forces and launch further counter-offensive on Moscow.
❗️ The enemy troops stood barely 150 kilometres from our capital, posing a threat that needed to be eliminated by any costs.
It was decided by the Soviet command to use the forces of the Kalinin and Western fronts manned by experienced units that had already fought the fascists during the winter battles for #Rzhev. After 20 days of brutal combat, the Red Army liberated the village of Polunino, approached the north-eastern suburbs of Rzhev, and captured an area on the Volga River between Rzhev and Zubtsov. They forced the enemy out of vital strategic points on the 'Rzhev salient' — Zubtsov, Karmanovo and Pogoreloye Gorodishche, and destroyed most combat-capable units of the Nazi army group 'Centre', which the enemy had deployed to the Rzhev area.
Thanks to the heroism and unparalleled courage of our soldiers, the Red Army advanced 40–45 kilometres westward, liberating previously-occupied large areas on the 'Rzhev salient' and eliminating major enemy troops which the German command planned to use in other vital sectors of the frontline.
The remaining units of the German army group near Rzhev were completely destroyed during operation 'Mars' (the second Rzhev-Sychyovka offensive held in the autumn and winter of 1942) and during the operation in March of 1943. Losing the battles near Stalingrad and in the Caucasus, the German armies had to leave the Rzhev salient. The Red Army seized the strategic initiative in the central section of the Soviet-German front, moving the frontline another 150 kilometres away from Moscow and liberating Rzhev and adjacent territories from the Nazi invaders.
The Nazi threat to Moscow was finally removed.
The title of #HeroOfTheSovietUnion was awarded to 43 Red Army servicemen for the fortitude and courage in the Battle of Rzhev.

The heroism of Soviet soldiers who fell in the battle of Rzhev has been immortalised in the Rzhev memorial — a 25-metre statue of a warrior supported by a flock of cranes as a symbol of the souls of fallen soldiers ... who perished but were not forgotten.

I will never forget Rzhev.
There may be other battles that claimed more lives, but it seemed there was never anything quite so sad, with weeks of fighting for five or six broken trees, the wall of a destroyed building, and a little mound.

💬 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
For 438 days, a fierce battle raged near this ancient Russian city. Over this period, the Red Army carried out four strategic offensive operations against Germany’s Army Group Centre. <...>
The German command referred to Rzhev as the “cornerstone of the Eastern front.” It deployed one of its biggest army groups with over 1.5 million fighters. <...>
The offensive operations in the Rzhev theatre played an important role in achieving a tipping point in Red Army’s favour along the entire Soviet-German front.

🎙Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova (Moscow, July 30, 2026)
🧸Helping a Boy Return to Russia to Be Reunited with His Mother. Four Children Are Being Reunited with Loved Ones in Ukraine and Third Countries
A five-year-old boy has recently returned to Russia. In 2020, the child remained with his father in Ukraine; for various reasons, his mother was unable to bring him back. In March 2026, she learned of the child’s father’s death, and the Office of the Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights assisted in arranging the family reunification.
Today, with the support of the Office, a mother was able to come to Russia to take her daughter home. Three more children will soon be reunited with their loved ones in Ukraine and in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Each family’s circumstances are different. A mother came from Germany to collect her nine-year-old daughter, who had been staying in Russia with her grandmother since 2023. A 15-year-old teenager had been living in Russia with close relatives. His mother, who left for Ukraine in 2022, is unable to come and collect her son on her own. A similar situation concerns a six-year-old boy, who, after his mother left for Ukraine, remained in the care of his grandmother.
Another 15-year-old teenager, following the death of his parents, stayed with relatives. However, his elder sister in Germany wishes to take responsibility for his further upbringing, and the boy himself also wants to live with her. Soon, all the children will be reunited with their loved ones.
📆 On Thursday in Moscow, Maria Lvova-Belova, Chair of the Children's Protection Fund, met with the children and those accompanying them. Humanitarian work to reunite families is being carried out on the instruction of Head of State Vladimir Putin, on the basis of requests from parents or close relatives who possess the necessary legal grounds, with the interests of the children and all circumstances of each case taken into mandatory account.
Special gratitude is due to the First Lady of the United States of America, Melania Trump, for her unwavering commitment and active participation in efforts to reunite children with their families.
The International Committee of the Red Cross traditionally provides support.
❗️In total, with the involvement of the institution of children’s rights commissioners, 31 children from 23 families have been reunited with relatives in Russia, while 145 children from 118 families have been reunited with relatives in Ukraine and third countries.
🇷🇺🇺🇸With the support of Melania Trump, 33 children have been reunited with loved ones in Russia, Ukraine, and third countries.
