🇷🇺 President of Russia – Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin received, via videoconference, a report from Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces Sergei Karakayev on the successful test of the Sarmat missile (May 12, 2026)

💬 Vladimir Putin: Work to improve Russia’s deterrence capabilities was resumed in the early 2000s and has never stopped since.

Frankly speaking, Russia had no time for it back then. The country was going through a very difficult period in its history. But after the US withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002, we were forced – and I want to emphasise this – to think about ensuring our strategic security in the new reality and preserving the strategic balance of forces, parity.

☝️ That is why – let me stress this once again – Russia began developing advanced systems with no global equivalents, capable of reliably overcoming both existing and future missile defence systems.

We are implementing, step by step, the nuclear forces development programme adopted in this regard. In 2004, work began on the Avangard intercontinental-range missile system, which has been on combat duty since 2019.

Then came the Kinzhal, an air-launched intermediate-range hypersonic missile, which has been on combat duty since 2017. It is already being used in the special military operation, but work to improve it continues – including efforts to increase its accuracy when fitted with a non-nuclear payload.

Since 2025, the Oreshnik ground-based medium-range missile system has been placed on combat duty. It can also be equipped with nuclear warheads.

Work is nearing completion on two systems powered by compact nuclear propulsion units: the unique Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle and Burevestnik global-range cruise missile.

👉 Now, the Sarmat. Its development began in 2011. In 2018, the project and the advantages of Russia’s new advanced missile systems, including Sarmat, were publicly announced. Let me recall what was said at the time – and what gives our newest system its edge.

First, it is the most powerful missile system in the world, matching the power of the Voevoda missile system currently in service with us, which, as has just been said, is still of Soviet manufacture. The total yield of Sarmat’s delivered warhead is more than four times greater than that of the most powerful existing Western counterpart.

Second – and this is the key point – the missile can fly not only along a ballistic trajectory, but also along a suborbital one.

Third, this makes it possible to ensure an operational range of over 35,000 kilometres, while also doubling its accuracy characteristics and, finally, enabling it to overcome all existing and future missile defence systems.

🌟 May 12, 1944 – #Crimea liberated – a day of military glory of Russia.

#OTD in 1944, the Soviet troops triumphantly completed the Crimean Offensive Operation, bringing about the full liberation of Crimea from the Nazi invaders.

The operation had been prepared for a long time and postponed several times. On April 8, 1944, the Red Army finally delivered a crushing blow: in just two days, Soviet troops used almost 700 railway carloads of ammunition.

The offensive on Sevastopol was launched from two directions – from the north, through Sivash and Perekop, and from the east, from Kerch.

Earlier in the war, Sevastopol had heroically defended itself against German and Romanian forces for 250 days. In May 1944, the troops of General Fyodor Tolbukhin liberated the city in a decisive assault, recapturing it in just two days.

Sevastopol was liberated on May 9 1944 – exactly one year before #VictoryDay. On May 12, 1944, the Crimean Offensive Operation was completed, and Crimea was fully liberated.

⚡️ Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rodion Miroshnik:

💬 The Kiev regime responded to Russia’s proposals to introduce a “regime of silence” during the May 8-9 #VictoryDay celebrations by increasing attacks on civilian sites, which led to a rise in the number of victims of AFU strikes.

Over the past week, more than 230 civilians were affected, 25 of whom were killed by Ukrainian militants.

The neo-Nazis also sought to expand the geography of their strikes on civilian targets. Attacks affected at least 20 Russian regions located far from the zone of the special military operation, including the Moscow Region, Chuvash Republic and Chechen Republic.

The highest number of civilian casualties was recorded in the Belgorod, Kherson, Zaporozhye and Bryansk regions, the Chuvash Republic and the DPR. Residential areas and infrastructure facilities came under attack.

During the week of May 4-10, 234 civilians were affected by shelling carried out by Ukrainian Nazis: 209 people were injured, including 14 children, while 25 people were killed, including one child.

Over the past week, the AFU fired at least 3,594 munitions at civilian targets.

🎙 Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Fourth CIS Department Mikhail Kalugin's interview with TASS News Agency (May 12, 2026)

Key points:

#Azerbaijan

Russia and Azerbaijan traditionally maintain a busy schedule of contacts. High-level visits planned for 2026 are currently being worked out. We expect representative Azerbaijani delegations to attend the 17th International Economic Forum “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum” on May 12-17, as well as the 29th St Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 3-6.

• I would particularly highlight our cooperation on developing the western branch of the International North–South Transport Corridor – along the Caspian Sea, through Azerbaijan, from Russia to Iran – in line with the agreement signed on 21 December 2024. This is, without exaggeration, a strategic project for all of Eurasia, the importance of which goes far beyond the Russian-Azerbaijani agenda.

❗️The unconditional priority remains the release of the 11 Russian citizens arrested in Azerbaijan on 30 June–1 July 2025. The Russian Embassy in Baku is in close contact with them and their relatives.

#Armenia

Yerevan’s advance down the so-called European path may eventually trigger systemic changes in Russian-Armenian relations. This is despite the fact that the EU offers no clear alternative in terms of instruments for ensuring security, economic stability, well-being and prosperity – the very foundations of a country’s sovereignty.

European “specialists” are literally trying to mould Russia into an enemy. They are creating the false impression that Moscow is allegedly “opposed to the emergence of an independent Armenia”. They baselessly accuse our country of “hybrid attacks” and interference in the republic’s internal affairs – while, for some reason, refusing to see their own deep involvement in those affairs as interference.

Behind the Europeans’ obsessive attention to their so-called “equal partners” lies an entirely utilitarian approach, as has been repeatedly noted. In Brussels, no one has even considered Armenia’s interests – a country that, until recently, sought to maintain an equidistant position on the Ukraine crisis. The Europeans brought their Russophobic agenda into the republic and – whether deliberately or not – dragged Yerevan into it.

We are focused on joint, mutually enriching cooperation with Armenia. This is precisely the model embedded in the integration associations common to our countries – the #EAEU, the #CIS and the #CSTO. We have always interacted with Armenia on an equal footing, never imposing a cultural code or demanding that it give up its identity or historically significant symbols.

#Abkhazia #SouthOssetia

Having recognised the independence of Sukhum and Tskhinval in 2008 – after repelling the aggression against South Ossetia and preventing the same scenario from unfolding against Abkhazia – the Russian Federation guaranteed these states peace and security. Throughout this period, we have assisted our allies in strengthening their state institutions, economy, social sphere and international standing.

#Georgia

In its policy of isolating Russia, the EU has stumbled over Georgia as well. Moreover, the EU’s arm-twisting of the Georgian authorities and its brazen interference in the republic’s domestic affairs have produced a result Brussels did not expect. Tbilisi has become even more pragmatic, relying on the fundamental interests of the country and its people. One would think the EU should have drawn the appropriate conclusions. Far from it – it has resorted even more often to blackmail and threats in an attempt to force Georgia to change course.

Thanks to the fact that Georgia is not following the intrusive “advice” of its patrons, the country is developing successfully. An important factor in this has been the expansion of trade with Russia, which reached $2.7 billion in 2025.

#HistoryOfRussia

8️⃣0️⃣5️⃣ years ago, on May 13, 1221, the Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky, was born.

Of the Rurikid dynasty, he was Prince of Novgorod in 1236-1240, 1241-1251 and in 1257-1259, Grand Prince of Vladimir in 1252-1263 and Grand Prince of Kiev in 1246-1263.

Alexander Yaroslavovich (i.e. son of Yaroslav) was an outstanding statesman, military commander and diplomat who became one of the most remarkable historical figures of the Ancient Rus' and a national hero of the Russian people.

Alexander Nevsky played an instrumental role in consolidating Russian lands in the face of multiple external threats during an era of feudal fragmentation. The Russian Orthodox Church canonised him during the 1547 Moscow Council.

⚔️ Alexander was 19 years old when people started calling him Nevsky after his spectacular victory over Swedish Catholic invaders on July 15, 1240. This success gave him an aura of a defender of the Orthodox faith.

Two years later, on April 5, 1242, Nevsky led warriors from Novgorod and Suzdal during the Battle on the Ice. They won the battle against the crusaders from the Livonian Order and eliminated the threat they posed to their homeland for many years. Many learnt about this battle when watching Alexander Nevsky, a cinema classic by legendary Soviet director Sergei Eisenshtein. Incidentally, the famous saying “Those who come to us sword in hand will die by the sword” comes from this film. Of course, there is no record of Alexander saying any such thing as a historical figure, which did not prevent this phrase from becoming proverbial and associated with Alexander Nevsky.

However, another saying – "God is in right rather than might" – does come from Alexander Nevsky. According to the Life of Alexander Nevsky chronicle, this was what the prince told his troops before heading into the battle against the Swedes.

This was a time of great perils and challenges for our land, with an unrivalled and undefeated army headed by Genghis Khan’s grandson, Batu, arriving from the east. It was against this backdrop that Alexander stopped deadly invasion from the West.

Not only undefeated as a military commander, he was also an astute politician and diplomat who succeeded in building pragmatic ties with the Golden Horde, which was then at the nascent peak of its power and might.

It is not surprising that the prince’s historical role has been recognised by the state throughout Russia’s history.

In 1725, Catherine I of Russia introduced the Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky as one of the highest decorations in Russia with For Labour and the Fatherland as its motto. Its recipients included Alexander Suvorov, Mikhail Kutuzov, and Alexander Gorchakov.

Alexander Nevsky’s legacy has always helped Russia when facing the most challenging periods in its history, including the Great Patriotic War. In 1942, the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union established a military order and named it after Alexander Nevsky. It was used to award commanders for their outstanding service while fighting for their Motherland. Approved in 2010, the statute for this decoration sets forth that that Order of Alexander Nevsky is awarded for “distinguished personal merits… in reinforcing Russia’s international standing.”

Hundreds of churches and cathedrals across Russia and in Russia’s diplomatic missions abroad were named after Alexander Nevsky, perpetuating his image as the defender of the Fatherland. In 1828, the Alexander Nevsky chapel was established at the Foreign Ministry’s building on Petersburg’s Palace Square near the Pevchesky Bridge.

Foreign Ministry employees took their oath of office at the altar of this church when assuming new postings. The Foreign Ministry hosted a ceremony to unveil the prince’s bust on September 12, 2022, to mark the agency’s 220th anniversary.

❗️ Viewed as the heavenly patron of Russian diplomacy, there is no doubt that Alexander Nevsky will keep guiding us in our efforts to help strengthen the Russian world, our cultural and civilisational diversity, and traditional spiritual and moral values.
