🇷🇺On May 5, ahead of the 8️⃣1️⃣st anniversary of Victory, the Russian Embassy in Canada hosted the premiere of the documentary “Veterans of World War II”.

🎬 The film was produced by a group of Russian compatriots led by Alexey Dymov and Elchin Mukhtarov. It is based on unique video testimonies of Soviet and Canadian veterans reflecting on their wartime experiences, the Great Victory, and Allied cooperation during World War II.

🕯 Featured in the film are:

🔸Viktor Khomenko — participant in the defense of Leningrad and the battles at the Nevsky Pyatachok bridgehead, commander of a medical platoon;

🔸Wilfred O’Hearn — Canadian RCAF technician who helped maintain Allied aviation operations;

🔸Nadezhda Starcha — nurse who served during the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Kursk, and operations in the Baltics;

🔸Arkady Gorbunov — officer of the 1st Ukrainian Front, participant in battles in Poland and Berlin;

🔸Boris Gurevich — survivor of the Siege of Leningrad.

💬 In his welcoming remarks, Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov noted:

This film is a tribute to the heroes. Their memories carry the truth about a devastating war. The truth that must be known in order to prevent new world wars. We are proud of our Victory and will continue to honor Victory Day as a celebration of the life granted to us and future generations.

🏆 The authors expressed hope that “Veterans of World War II” will receive recognition at the upcoming 3rd International Eurasia Film Festival in Sochi (June 13–19), and later be presented at other international festivals, including in Western countries, China, and friendly states.

⚡️ Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (May 6, 2026)

💬 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation hereby announces that a Note Verbale has been sent to all diplomatic missions accredited to the Ministry, as well as to missions of international organisations. The note reads as follows:
"On May 4, 2026, the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation released an official statement in response to threats by the Kiev regime to carry out a strike on Moscow during Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War which is a holiday that is sacred to all Russians. The Foreign Ministry urgently calls on the government of your country/the leadership of your organisation to treat this statement with the utmost seriousness and to ensure the timely evacuation from the city of Kiev of the personnel of diplomatic and other missions, as well as civilians, in view of the inevitable retaliatory strike by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on Kiev, including against decision-making centres, should the Kiev regime carry out its criminal terrorist plans during the Victory Day celebrations."

Russian diplomatic missions abroad are also informing their host countries and international organisations of this.

Let us look back at how the events unfolded.

On May 4, during the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, Kiev regime leader Zelensky went so far as to make aggressive and threatening statements about his intention to disrupt Moscow’s sacred Victory Day celebrations with terrorist attacks. He said this in the presence of representatives from a number of EU countries none of whom did anything to rein in the presumptuous Kiev regime leader.

On the same day, the Russian Defence Ministry issued a warning statement in response to Zelensky’s stated aggressive intentions. To reinforce my point, it was done in response to what Zelensky had said.

If EU countries believe they will be able to hush up those public threats and to sweep Zelensky’s aggressive statements under the carpet, they are gravely mistaken.

We are well aware of the collective Western minority’s attitude towards May 9. They are systematically destroying Soviet memorial legacy, exhuming the remains of Soviet soldiers, and rewriting and distorting history. As they continue to supply Ukraine with weapons, they are acting as accomplices in the criminal plans hatched by the Kiev regime.

However, the instinct for self-preservation should not fail them.

☝️ We are not acting from a position of aggression; we are acting from a position of an inevitable response to aggression.

This is how the statement issued by the Defence Ministry on May 4 and our subsequent steps should be interpreted. It must certainly not be hushed up. It must be taken very, very seriously.

❗️In accordance with the decision of President of the Russian Federation and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation V.Putin, on the days of commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, the Russian side announces the armistice from 00:00 of 8 May to 10 May.

During the specified period, all Groups of Russian troops in the special military operation zone will completely cease fire.

Strikes by missile troops and artillery, long-range maritime and air-based high-precision weapons, attack UAVs at AFU deployment areas, and infrastructure facilities connected to military industry and the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the depths of Ukraine will be stopped at the same time.

We call on the Ukrainian side to follow this example.

Should the AFU violate the truce in the zone of the special military operation, as well as carry out attempts to launch strikes against settlements and facilities on the territory of the Russian regions, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will deliver an adequate response.

It is also recalled that in the event of attempts by the Kiev regime to disrupt the celebration of the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will launch a massive missile strike on the centre of Kiev.

Once again, we warn the civilian population of Kiev and members of foreign diplomatic missions to leave the city in a timely manner.

⚡️ Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova's statement on the Kiev regime militants’ attack on a TASS photojournalist (May 7, 2026)

On May 6, while filming the aftermath of AFU shelling of civilian sites in Vasilyevka, Zaporozhye Region, TASS photojournalist Alexander Polegenko came under a targeted attack by a strike UAV operated by militants of the Kiev regime.

The drone damaged his car, the journalist himself miraculously survived.

This attempted murder of a civilian – and media workers are classified as civilians under international humanitarian law – looks especially cynical against the backdrop of the “regime of silence” announced by Zelensky. This attack is yet another vivid demonstration of the hypocrisy and vileness of the Kiev junta, for which nothing has long remained sacred.

The terrorist methods of the Kiev regime must receive a proper public assessment from relevant international bodies – first and foremost the OSCE, UNESCO and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Their reaction – or rather, its absence – following the numerous ceremonies recently held to mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3, will show how seriously they really take journalists’ safety.

Each new crime committed by Ukrainian Banderites, met with silence or empty platitudes from these multilateral bodies, leaves another shameful stain on their reputation.

Embassy’s comment on Minister Anand's recent statement
(“Russia’s latest drone strikes”)

Since May 1st alone, the Kiev regime has carried out over 2600 drone strikes on dozens of Russian regions killing civilians, damaging residential areas, causing harm to environment.

It is hard to believe that Global Affairs Canada is unaware of this, or that Zelenskiy and his clique are lying.

❗️Therefore, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that those who have prepared Minister Anand's statement are engaged in a deliberate disinformation of the Canadian public.

🎙Congratulations from the Ambassador of Russia to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, to the Veterans of the Great Patriotic War and Russian Compatriots Residing in Canada on the Occasion of the 81st Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (May 7, 2026)

💬 Dear compatriots! Dear friends!

🇷🇺I congratulate you on the 81st anniversary of the Great Victory. May 9 is a sacred date that unites generations. There is no family in Russia that was untouched by the war.

The defeat of the enemy, who treacherously attacked our country, came at an immense cost — through unparalleled sacrifice, hardship, and suffering. Millions gave their lives on the battlefield, perished under occupation, or died during bombings. Our people were subjected to genocide. But they did not surrender and did not break. They endured and prevailed.

Loyalty to the Motherland and to duty, patriotism, and the unbreakable spirit of each individual enabled us to defend our right to live, to secure independence and freedom for future generations, and to save the world. The feat of the Red Army is immortal.

🪖 Today and always, we bow before the steadfastness of the soldiers who fought in the fiercest battles for our land — on land, at sea, and in the skies. We honor the workers of the home front; the women who stood in defense of the Motherland alongside men; the children who endured the hardships of wartime and worked in factories shoulder to shoulder with adults; the doctors and nurses who faithfully carried out their duty. We mourn all those who fell. We honor our veterans. We do not forget the contribution of our allies, including the participants of the Arctic convoys.

❗️Our task is to preserve the legacy of Victory. Russia will not allow the distortion of history, the whitewashing, or the revival of Nazism. We will continue to firmly uphold the truth and justice for which our fathers and grandfathers fought, following the example of their courage and resilience. Ours is a just cause — and therefore victory will be ours.

🇷🇺Our lowest bow to all defenders of the Fatherland!

🔴🔴Happy Victory Day! To our Victory!

🇷🇺On May 7, 2026, the Permanent Mission of Russia to ICAO together with the Consulate General of Russia in Montreal held a solemn reception ahead of the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The event brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps, Russian compatriots, and veterans’ organizations of Montreal.

🎬 Guests attended a screening of the documentary “Veterans of World War II”, created by Russian compatriots in Canada and based on the memories of Soviet and Canadian veterans about the War, Allied cooperation, and the Great Victory.

🇷🇺 Permanent Representative of Russia to ICAO Alexander Batalov highlighted the significance of the Victory Day for Russia and its people:

The courage, strength of spirit, and determination of our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers made it possible to preserve the freedom and independence of the Motherland, destroy the Nazism, and save Europe and the world from the brown plague. That is why Victory Day is not merely a date on the calendar, but a symbol of courage, resilience, and the strength of our people.

❗️Minister-Counsellor of the Russian Embassy in Canada Oleg Shapovalov noted that the Victory over Nazism opened a new chapter in world history — a chapter of peace, humanism, and international cooperation.

For all of us, Victory Day is also a Day of Remembrance. As long as we preserve the memory of the feat of our ancestors and the price they paid for the future of humanity, such a tragedy must never happen again.

🕯 Participants honored the memory of the fallen heroes of the Great Patriotic War and expressed gratitude to the generation of victors who defended freedom and peace for future generations.

In the document we:

➡️ provided an update on the interim results of humanitarian efforts to ensure safety and support of children and families, including «To the children's hands» headquarters, «The Day after Tomorrow» shifts and the development of infrastructure in regions affected by hostilities;

➡️ presented more details on how the work to reunite children with their loved ones is organized;

➡️ added a section on the list of 339 individuals handed over to the Russian delegation during the negotiations in Istanbul in the summer of 2025;

➡️ expanded the chapter on international cooperation – with the collaboration with the First Lady of the United States of America Melania Trump, previously with the State of Qatar;

➡️ updated the sections on our operating principles and examples of assisstance to families;

➡️ supplemented the chapters on disinformation surrounding the topic of child protection.

We have updated the appendices with stories of children being reunited with their loved ones in Russia, Ukraine and other countries where we have been able to help.

I am hopeful that the channel of communication with the American side, established with the assistance of Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries, will make it possible to continue assisting families affected by the current conflict, as well as to convey information about the true state of affairs to the international community.

The first issue of the bulletin was published in April 2023. The decision to prepare such a document was taken following numerous inquiries from Russian and foreign journalists regarding assistance for children and families.

The work continues.

🌟 On May 8, 1949, the iconic monument in the Soviet War Memorial in #TreptowerPark in Berlin — aka the Soldier-Liberator — was unveiled, right there, at the sacred site of the mass grave of 7'000 Red Army soldiers and officers who perished in the fierce Battle of Berlin in April-May 1945.

This iconic #WW2-era memorial is one of the most worldwide recognizable symbol of the Soviet people’s Great Victory over Nazism. The bronze statue of a Soviet soldier, carefully holding a rescued German girl to his chest and breaking the Nazi swastika with his sword, embodies the noble mission of the Red Army, which liberated Europe from the shackles of Hitler's occupation and put #WWII to its final end.

Inside the foundation of the #LiberatorSoldier monument, there is a memorial hall crowned with images of the Order of Victory. Adorning the wall, there is an inscription:
Today, it is globally acknowledged that, through their selfless struggle, the Soviet people saved European civilisation from annihilation by fascists.

This stands as the Soviet peoples' historic feat for humanity.

***

The architectural design of the memorial in Treptower Park commemorates the heroic deed of Red Army soldier Nikolay Masalov. On April 30, 1945, during the fierce street combat in Berlin, the Red Army soldier risked his life to rescue a three-year-old German girl from Nazi gunfire.

The memorial complex took three years to build, from 1946 to 1949. The project was coordinated by famous Soviet monumental sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich, architect Yakov Belopolsky and artist Anatoly Gorpenko.

The very site for the future monument in Berlin was chosen for a particular reason. Treptower Park, located along the Spree River, had been a cherished public park for Berliners. The architects envisioned the memorial as an enduring testament to remind to future generations of who had truly defeated the Third Reich and brought back freedom to the German people and all European nations.

The historical importance of the memorial in preserving the memory of the Soviet soldiers’ heroism can be seen in the architects' note for the initial sketches for the Soviet monuments in Berlin. The note reads, in part:
When designing the projects, the objective must be to create enduring, monumental structures that embody the idea of commemorating the glorious memory of the Soviet Army’s liberating mission, for which these soldiers gave their lives…

The TREPTOWER monument must be especially grand.

German sculptors also contributed to its creation, while the choice of building material — the granite taken from the ruins of the defeated Hitler's Reichskanzlei — was imbued with powerful symbolism.

🎖 The monument was officially unveiled on May 8, 1949. During the ceremony, Berlin’s military commandant, Major General Alexander Kotikov, delivered his famous address:
This monument in the heart of Europe, in Berlin, will forever remind the peoples of the world when, how, and at what cost Victory was achieved, our Motherland was saved and the present and future generations of humanity were preserved.

***

Each and every year on May 9, despite the authorities’ ongoing efforts to stifle our sacred #VictoryDay commemorations, thousands of compassionate citizens — our compatriots, and Germans alike — gather at Treptower Park to cherish the memory of Liberators who saved the world from Nazism.

💬 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (excerpt from briefing of April 24, 2026):
This memorial features the statue of a Soviet soldier holding a German girl.

Not a Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Tajik, Armenian, Azerbaijani, or Jewish girl, but a German girl.

This, I believe, represents the highest expression of humanism: a Soviet soldier is portrayed as a liberator, first and foremost, of the German people from Nazism, even though his own family had been destroyed, his home obliterated, and Soviet towns and villages burned down.

Yet he protects a German girl.
