8️⃣0️⃣ years ago, near the German town of Torgau on the Elbe River, Soviet soldiers shook hands with their American brothers-in-arms.
#ElbeDay — a landmark event in the history of World War II — marked the imminent collapse of Nazi Germany and underscored the joint success of the Allies in the final defeat of Nazism.
A photo of the Soviet and American lieutenants — the first to shake hands during the Allies’ encounter on the Elbe — quickly spread across newspapers around the globe. Moscow saluted the Torgau meeting with 24 volleys from 324 artillery guns. Similar celebrations took place in New York’s Times Square.
Ordinary soldiers and their commanders reached out to one another with open hands. They exchanged souvenirs, shared smiles, and raised toasts in quiet celebration. The Americans eagerly accepted distinctly Russian keepsakes: stars from caps, polished buttons, and brass belt buckles — tokens of an unlikely, hard-won camaraderie.
Just 15 days later, the Third Reich capitulated.

The President received a report from the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces confirming the complete rout of the Ukrainian military outfits present in the Kursk region
Vladimir Putin extended congratulations and thanks to the personnel of the units that contributed to defeating the neo-Nazi groups.
Vladimir Putin extended congratulations and thanks to the personnel of the units that contributed to defeating the neo-Nazi groups.
The Kiev regime's reckless gamble has completely failed, and the enormous casualties the enemy has suffered, especially among the Ukrainian units that were the most battleworthy and best trained and had Western equipment — and we are talking about assault and special forces units here, — will definitely have an impact along the entire length of the line of contact. The total rout of the enemy in the border zone of the Kursk region sets the stage for further successful operations of our troops in other crucial areas of the frontline and brings us closer to the defeat of the neo-Nazi regime.
I would like to congratulate all the personnel, all the soldiers and commanders on this success, their victory. I thank you for your valour and heroism, for your service to our Fatherland and the people of Russia.
