⚡️ Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s video greetings on Diplomatic Worker’s Day (Moscow, February 10, 2024)

Read in full

Key points

🔵 In keeping with our long-standing good tradition, we celebrate our professional holiday in February, which unites all those who defend Russia’s foreign policy track.

🔵 No matter where you work – in the central building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Smolenskaya Square, the territorial missions in the regions of the Russian Federation, or the Russian foreign missions – you uphold the true values of Russian diplomacy: loyalty to your Fatherland, patriotism, selflessness and a clear vision of Russia’s national interests.

🔵 Faced with the hybrid aggression launched by the collective West, Russia’s foreign policy service is making its contribution to the diplomatic support of the special military operation and the effort to achieve its goals.

❗️ Today, Russia stands at the vanguard of fast-moving change. By and large, we play a central role in defining this development vector and its content. This means that all of us without exception must keep up to speed at all times and adopt a forward-looking mindset in order to anticipate anything our ill-wishers may do, while being proactive and creative in adapting our enduring foreign policy principles to the changing environment. These principles include our commitment to independence, being results-driven, inclusiveness and a multi-faceted approach.

🔵 Russia is set to hold a presidential election soon. In fact, it is just a month away. This is a challenging moment in the history of our country when we must all fulfil our civic duty. I am certain that all our foreign missions will make the necessary arrangements to enable Russians to vote abroad. We are taking all the necessary steps to make this happen.

🔵 I wish you every success and good luck. Happy Diplomatic Worker’s Day.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at a gala meeting devoted to Diplomatic Worker’s Day (Moscow, February 9, 2024)

Key talking points:

🔵 This is not the first time that our country is at the peak of geopolitical processes. This is why Russia’s place in the emerging multipolar world and the future of the world itself largely depends on us, on our dedication and a correct understanding of the priorities.

🔵 The US-led collective West is not letting up in its attempts to impose an unfair unipolar global arrangement on the world.

🔵 Acting together with the countries of the global majority, our associates in the international arena, we will continue working for the unconditional guarantees for our lawful interests in regional security based on the principle of an indivisible Russia.

🔵 The hybrid war unleashed by the West against those who object to its global striving to maintain its domination is creating not only obstacles but also impetuses for strengthening versatile ties.

🔵 We intend to continue consolidating our strategic partnerships with the PRC, India, Brazil, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and a vast number of other countries that share our conceptual approaches to the world situation and the prospects for the development of our common planet.

🔵 We attach primary importance to reaching the goals of Russia’s current presidency in the #CIS and the expanded #BRICS.

🔵 We focus in particular on advancing BRICS’ relations with regional and sub-regional association from the Global South

🔵 We will continue to work within the #G20, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, the East Asia Summit mechanisms, and other multilateral associations that include the participation of Western representatives.

🔵 We will do our best to help further strengthen the #SCO in the interests of effectively addressing pressing international issues and promoting our concept for strengthening Eurasian security across the board.

📅 On February 11, 1930, the youngest Hero of the Soviet Union Valya Kotik was born.

When the Nazis occupied his home village Shepetovka, 11-year-old Valya began fighting against the invaders. The young partisan showed exceptional bravery.

Valya often put his life at risk, participating in real combat operations. He directly took part in attacks on German convoys, bridge demolitions, and ambushes. He was frequently ordered to monitor German patrols, memorize their schedules and movements. The intelligence gathered by Valya was always very prompt and reliable, characterized by precision and accuracy.

🕯 On February 16, 1944, during heavy fighting for Izyaslav, Valya was severely wounded and died the next day at the age of 14.

For his heroism in the fight against the occupiers, Valya Kotik was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, and the Medal "Partisan of the Great Patriotic War" 2nd class.

In many cities of the former Soviet republics, monuments installed and streets named in honor of the heroic boy.

❗️ In today's Ukraine Valya's legacy is being erased, instead other "heroes" are being cherished - Hitler's cronies, murderers and war criminals. Since 2022, there is no longer a Valya Kotik street in Kiev, nor there is a monument in the village of Dolhoye in the Zakarpattia region, now dismantled.

#WorldRadioDay

📻 February 13 is World Radio Day, proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2011 and endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2012. It commemorates the first broadcast of UN Radio in 1946. This year's theme for World Radio Day is “Radio: A Century Informing, Entertaining and Educating.”

Radio continues to be a highly sought-after and popular means of mass communication. Although radio stations today are introducing new formats to engage with their audience and digitalising the airwaves, the core objective remains the same: to provide prompt and honest information to their listeners.

❗️ Unfortunately, the countries of the collective West have forgotten the true meaning of freedom of the press means. Anything that contradicts that contradicts the modern "Anglo-Saxon" and EU mainstream is subjected to censorship. Russian media, including radio stations and publications with radio broadcasting, have been banned and blocked. For example, Sputnik is banned in the European Union, and access to the websites of many Russian radio stations is restricted.

☝️ We hope that World Radio Day will serve as an opportunity for genuine discussion within the professional community, focusing on challenges faced by radio broadcasters and the prospects for the industry’s development. It is essential to adhere to high standards of quality and impartial journalism during this dialogue, rather than engaging in further political speculation.

🗓 On February 13-14, 1945 the Royal Air Force and the US Air Force carried out barbarian bombing of Dresden.

According to many historians, the bombing of Dresden had no military significance and instead aimed to achieve a political goal. The Western Allies wanted to showcase their aerial might before the advancing Red Army.

The first air raid was launched on the evening of February 13 with 244 heavy British bombers dropping 507 tonnes of high-explosive bombs and 374 tonnes of incendiaries. The second 30-minute air raid came in the early hours of February 14 and was twice as powerful: 529 bombers dropped 965 tonnes of high-explosive bombs and over 800 tonnes of incendiaries. On the morning of February 14, 311 USAF planes dropped over 780 tonnes of bombs. On February 15, 210 US aircraft dropped 462 tonnes of bombs on the city.

Up to 1,400 bombers and 1,000 fighters took part in the raids, dropping ~3,900 tonnes of bombs on the city. As a result of the bombing, the city was turned into ruins: ~35,470 buildings were destroyed, architectural monuments were damaged, up to 135,000 people were killed.

❗️This proved the most devastating European airstrike in all of World War II. The area of Dresden, completely destroyed by the raid, exceeded that of Nagasaki four times over, after the August 9, 1945 US atomic bomb strike. Over 75-80 percent of Dresden’s buildings were destroyed.

💬 Maria Zakharova: While analysing this historical fact, one finds it hard to show any emotions linked with the need for vengeance. The USSR had every reason to exact vengeance on Nazi German forces, however, the Soviet struggle against Nazism did not call for destroying cities together with their population. This is the “privilege” of the Anglo-Saxon world, in the worst sense of the word (from briefing of February 10, 2023).

In January 2024 NATO has decided that the time has come to erase the memory of the victims of that crime. That it was Germans themselves who did it (from post of January 16, 2024).

🗓 On February 14, 1943, the Red Army liberated Voroshilovgrad (now Lugansk) during Operation Leap.

The strength of the German Wehrmacht was significantly weakened following the defeat of Nazi forces near Stalingrad. This paved the way for the liberation of Donbass.

🥇 Soviet forces under the command of Colonel General Nikolai Vatutin launched a two-pronged attack to liberate the city by advancing on Ostraya Mogila and a flour plant. The Third Guards Army, led by Lieutenant General Dmitry Lelyushenko, and the Fifth Tank Division, commanded by Major General Ivan Shlemin, engaged the enemy in the battle for Voroshilovgrad.

🕯 German invaders had occupied Voroshilovgrad for over seven months, during which they executed thousands of civilians. Many people died of starvation. Over 4,000 people were deported to Germany for forced labour.

The enemy destroyed over 2,500 buildings, including seven out of the nine schools, and 65 medical institutions, including almost all outpatient clinics.

Red Army personnel fought resolutely to liberate Voroshilovgrad, displaying extraordinary courage, fortitude and heroism. In total, 10,000 Red Army officers and soldiers lost their lives in the battle for the city.

⚔️ Voroshilovgrad became the first regional centre of Soviet Ukraine to be liberated during the Great Patriotic War. Operation Leap marked the beginning of the liberation of the Ukrainian SSR by the Red Army.

In September 1943, Soviet forces expelled the enemy from the Voroshilovgrad Region. Over 120,000 Soviet officers and soldiers were killed in action.

🗓 On February 14, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in a Government Hour session of the State Duma where he made remarks on current issues related to the foreign policy of the Russian Federation.

The Foreign Minister focused on the key aspects of the Ministry’s efforts to resolve the foreign policy challenges facing the country and took questions from deputies. He concentrated on issues related to promoting partnerships with states that have a constructive attitude to Russia, ensuring favourable external conditions for its socio-economic development, and protecting the rights and interests of compatriots living abroad.

Sergey Lavrov also spoke about strengthening Russia’s role as a leading world power, deepening integration in the Union State, #EAEU, #CIS and #SCO, the Russian chairmanship of #BRICS, the resistance of the Global Majority to the dictates of the collective West, and the formation of a fair multipolar world order.

☝️ The Minister’s regular meetings with the members of both chambers of the Federal Assembly are an opportunity to “compare notes” and determine the main areas of joint effort by the executive and legislative authorities in the framework of the Foreign Policy Concept of the Russian Federation.

🎙 President Vladimir Putin answered questions from journalist Pavel Zarubin (February 14, 2024)

Key talking points:

❗️ We have been constantly deceived about NATO’s non-expansion to the east. NATO proceeded to expand five times, completely deceiving us.

🔹 We did not initiate this war; rather, we are striving to end it. During the first phase, we tried to achieve this through peaceful means, specifically, through the Minsk agreements. However, it became apparent that we had been given the runaround once again. Both the former German Chancellor and the former President of France admitted and publicly stated that they had never intended to honour the agreements.

🔹 German Foreign Minister and people like her, are, of course, hostile towards Russia. In my opinion, she is also hostile towards her own country because it is hard to imagine such a high-ranking politician treating the economic interests of her country and people with such disdain.

🔹 Exceptionalism of certain nations, as compared to others, is found in many countries these days. This is how Nazism started. Now that this has become so widespread, it would be appropriate to conduct this anti-fascist and anti-Nazi propaganda and work at the same global level.

🔹 I believe that there is absolutely no point in NATO. Its only purpose is to serve as a tool of US foreign policy. If the United States considers this tool no longer necessary, that is their decision.

⚡️ Foreign Ministry statement on the Kiev regime’s latest atrocity

The Kiev criminal regime has once again revealed its neo-Nazi essence to the world.

During the day on February 15, Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out another large-scale attack on civilian areas in Belgorod. According to preliminary reports, six people were killed, including one child, and 17 were injured, four of whom were minors. Residential buildings, an industrial enterprise, a number of cars, and a store were damaged. This attack had no military significance.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, on the same day, air defence systems successfully intercepted 14 rockets launched from Ukrainian RM-70 Vampire MLRS in the airspace over the Belgorod Region.

❗️ The Foreign Ministry strongly condemns this heinous crime against civilians and civilian infrastructure. The attack will be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators will face severe punishment.

It is clear that the Kiev Nazis, having suffered numerous defeats on the battlefield, have chosen to unleash their anger on peaceful Russian citizens. The latest terrorist attack by the Banderites has once again exposed the criminal role of the collective West led by the US, which continues to pump the Nazi regime with deadly weapons that are used against innocent civilians.

☝️ We call on the international community to condemn this outrageous criminal act. We intend to bring this matter for discussion at the UN Security Council and other international bodies.
