Icons are reflections of men who have been regenerated into eternity; they aid us in uncovering and developing the beauty of holiness.
In other words, they help men attain likeness to God, following the basic principle that
โ€œwe become like that which we habitually contemplateโ€

Seraphim of Vyritsa

Commemoration
March 21/April 3

Vasily Nikolaevich Muravyov March 31 [April 12], 1866, Vakhrameevo village, Yaroslavl Province โ€” April 3, 1949, Vyritsa) was a hieroschemamonk of the Russian Orthodox Church, widely revered in the Orthodox community as an elder and seer.

In the early 20th century, this man, who came from a peasant background, became one of the wealthiest people in Russia. After the 1917 revolution โ€“ in the midst of a terrible time of turmoil that promised torment and death for the mere name of Christ! โ€“ he gave away all his property and entered a monastery.

"This Was From Me" is a famous letter written by saint Seraphim of Vyritsa that he sent to his spiritual child, a bishop who was in a Soviet prison at that time; this homily "This Was from Me" is written as a consolation and counsel to the bishop to let him know that God the Creator addresses to the soul of man.

Have you ever thought that everything that touches you touches Me as well? For that which touches you touches the apple of My eye.
You are dear in my eyes, precious, and I have loved you; therefore it is a particular pleasure for Me to educate you.
When temptations arise against you, and the enemy comes like a river, I want you to knowโ€“This was from Me.
Your weakness needs My strength, and your safety comes from giving Me the opportunity to fight for you. If you find yourself in difficult circumstances, among people who do not understand you, who do not take what you like into consideration, who alienate youโ€“This was from Me.
I am God, Who arranges circumstances.
It was no accident that you find yourself in the place where you are; this is the place I have appointed for you.
Did you not ask that I teach you humility? Well, then, look: I have placed you in precisely that place, in that school, where this lesson is learned.
Your surroundings and those who live with you are only fulfilling My will.
..

St.Philaret of Moscow

Vasily Mikhaylovich Drozdov
(26 December 1782/6 January 1783 โ€“ 1 December 1867) - Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna and the most influential figure in the Russian Orthodox Church for more than 40 years, from 1821 to 1867.

If you are undertaking anything, before asking any other adviser, ask the advice of faith.
Appeal in the words of the Apostle: Lord, what wilt Thou have me do? (Acts 9:6).
Is what I would undertake pleasing to Thee, Lord?
If it is pleasing, bless it; if not, do not let me do what is displeasing to Thee.
And then listen to what the Lord tells you in your conscience, in your reason, in the counsels of pious and wise people and, having begun the course that you select, pray in your heart:
"O Lord, make haste to help me" (Ps. 69:1).

Lazarus Saturday

In the final days of Lent, we prepare to commemorate the passion and resurrection of our Lord. As an overture to the Passion Week comes the Resurrection of Lazarus, followed by Palm Sunday. In the Bible, these two events are only days apart and symbolise our solid faith in the resurrection of the dead.
Both feasts share a common Troparion: โ€œBy raising Lazarus from the dead before Your passion, You confirmed the universal resurrection, O Christ God.โ€
If there is one thing most people fear and dread, it is death. โ€œTry to deny death. It will deny you, and that will be the end of it,โ€ says the hero of a known novel by Turgenev. And even the promise of a future resurrection, however comforting, does not diminish its anguish. โ€œI weep and I wail, when I think upon death, and behold our beauty, fashioned after the image of God, lying in the tomb dishonoured, disfigured, bereft of form,โ€ reads Saint John of Damascusโ€™ hymn heard at the burial services.
With the biblical story of raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus sends a powerful and reassuring message: โ€œI am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.โ€ (John 11:25-26)

What is the significance of raising Lazarus back to life?
Christโ€™s friend Lazarus rests within us, dead and vanquished. But Christ, Who is the Resurrection and Life, will come to raise his dead friend again.
Let there be hope, light and joy in our hearts at this coming resurrection.

Here is the image for us:
In each of us Lazarus is lying dead, vanquished, and surrounded by our often hopeless grieving. But the Gospel reading just before the days of the Passion has this message: "Do not fear, I am the Resurrection and the Life. The Lord's friend that is in you, whom you consider irrevocably dead, can rise again at a single word of Mine, and indeed will rise again."
So let us enter the days of the Passion with the hope, with the certainty that we are going towards the transition from the temporary to the eternal, from death to life, from our defeat to the victory of God.
Let us enter these days of the Passion with trepidation at the knowledge of how much the Lord loves us and at what cost He gives us life.
Let us enter with hope and light in our hearts, and joy in the coming Resurrection.

Accustom yourself to pray your own prayers. For instance: it is the essence of evening prayer to thank God for the day and everything that happened, both pleasant and unpleasant; to ask forgiveness for all wrongs committed, promising to improve during the next day; and to pray that God preserve you during sleep. Express all this to God from your mind and from your whole heart.

Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem

Palm Sunday

Having completed His preaching on the earth, our Lord Jesus Christ made His triumphant entry into the royal city of Jerusalem, into the city where the true God was worshipped, a city in most ways Godly.
The Lord made this entry as the King and victor, in order to finish His service by a decisive exploit: destroying death by death; removing the curse from the human race by taking this curse upon Himself.
He made His entry into the royal city on the colt, whereon yet never man sat (Lk. 19:30), in order to restore to mankind the royal dignity which our forefather had wasted; to restore this dignity by ascending the cross.
The unbroken colt was tamed beneath the wondrous Rider.

Colt - it is an image of every person who is led by irrational desires, deprived of spiritual freedom, attached to the passions and habits of fleshly life.
This means that the person who has left his sinful life is led to the Gospels, and is clothed as if in apostolic vestments, in the most detailed and refined knowledge of Christ and His commandments.
Then the Lord seats Himself upon him by spiritually appearing to him and spiritually abiding in him, as it was His good will to promise: He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him (Jn. 14:21).
And my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him (Jn. 14:23).
The Lordโ€™s coming is accompanied by peace surpassing words and comprehension; peace that is full of grace, and worthy of the one Who grants itโ€”the Lord. This peace is not to be compared with the natural rest of fallen man, who may feel rest and pleasure from fleshly delights, and who may consider his own insensibility, his own eternal death, to be rest.
The Lord is seated upon the natural qualities of the person who has submitted to Him and has assimilated His all-holy teachings; and He leads that person into the spiritual city of God, the city of peaceโ€”into the Jerusalem created by God, and not by man.

Love for a person saves both the one being saved and the one saving.
But to spiritually save others, one must first save oneself.
If a person is drowning themselves, they cannot spiritually save those who are drowning.

Faith isn't something you can prove; it's something you show through the living essence of truth.
You can only persuade others by the sheer conviction of your own personal happiness in it, by the infectiousness of your divine delight in faith.
This is the sole means of its transmission.

Saint Sergiy Mechev
Holy Martyr

Sergei (Sergius) Alekseevich Mechev
(September (17) 30, 1892, Moscow - January 6, 1942, Yaroslavl) - archpriest, fourth child of Archpriest Alexei Mechev, saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Throughout his life, Saint Sergiy Mechev was a good shepherd to his flock, a beloved head of a church parish, and also an outstanding and unwavering witness of Christ who remained steadfast in his faith, ultimately rising to the highest form of service to Him, the feat of martyrdom.

The Holy Church says:
Go and learn from both the Pharisee and the tax collector. From the Pharisee, learn his actions, but do not be proud at all, for the action itself is insignificant and does not save.
Yet, remember that the tax collector is not yet saved, but is merely more justified in God's eyes than the Pharisee adorned with virtue.
Only if we proceed in this way can we expect our Great Lent to be fruitful.

THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION

March 25/April 7

Behold the handmaiden of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.โ€
(Luke 1:38)

Such was the principal rule of the life of the most-blessed Virgin Mary. Thus did she feel and speak, and not only when the Archangel Gabriel announced to her that she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God, but throughout her entire life.
Having once and for all devoted herself to the Lord, she drew from that very devotion to Godโ€™s will, the courage and strength to endure all her sorrows, an unshakable resolve, and steadfastness to submit to His will and to obey all of the Lordโ€™s Commandments.

On the feast of Annunciation of the Theotokos we celebrate and commemorate two things.
First of all, it is the divine initiative of God. He knew He was willing to take on flesh from the Virgin in order to save us all.
This way God also ceased to be something strictly transcendental and out of this world - He became a part of this world, a part of His own creation.
Secondly, we commemorate Maryโ€™s acceptance to become the Mother of incarnate God. She could have said no, but she didnโ€™t. She was brave and yet humble enough to accept Godโ€™s will.
This is such a great example to all of us - a Christian is someone who is both courageous and humble, because it is impossible to accept Godโ€™s will without those two qualities.

Nowhere is the Most Holy Virgin Mary so blessed as in the Divine services for the feast of the Annunciation. Here she is glorified as the author of our salvation. โ€œToday is the beginning of our salvation,โ€ says the troparion of this feast. But the same troparion also shows us the reason why the Virgin Mary is so honored by the Church: โ€œThe Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin as Gabriel announces the coming of grace.โ€ Therefore, the Virgin Mary is glorified as the initiator of our salvation, in that she was vouchsafed to be the Mother of the Son of God and gave us the opportunity to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit to make us sons of God by grace and to inherit Divine glory here, and especially in the future age.

Great Wednesday

On Holy and Great Wednesday the divine Fathers ordained a commemoration to be kept of the woman who was a harlot and who anointed the Lord with myrrh, inasmuch as this took place a short time before the saving Passion.

We see in today's Gospel (Matt. 26:6-16) that the sinful woman brought oil of myrrh to anoint Christ, while Judas brought his greed to the Sanhedrin.
She spread out her hair to wipe the Lord's feet, while Judas stretched out his hands for the money.
She rejoiced to pour out the very precious oil on the Lord, while Judas made plans to sell the One who is above all price. By anointing Christ, she acknowledged Him as Lord, while Judas severed himself from the Master.
She was set free of her sins, while Judas was entrapped and became a slave of the devil.
She tenderly kissed the feet of Christ, asking for forgiveness, while Judas plotted to betray the Lord with a kiss, anticipating the silver.

Because the betrayal of Christ occurred on a Wednesday, the Orthodox Church has received the tradition from Apostolic times to observe Wednesday as a fast day throughout the entire year.

Kontakion, Tone 4

Though I have transgressed, O Good One,
more than the harlot,
I have never offered Thee a flood of tears.
but, praying in silence,
I fall down before Thee,
with love embracing Thy most pure feet,
that Thou as Master mayest grant me remission of sins.
And I cry to Thee, O Saviour:
Deliver me from the defilement of my evil deeds.

Holy Thursday

This is the day we commemorate the Last Supper - the revelation of Godโ€™s love for people.

The Gospel of Matthew tells us about the Last Supper that Jesus Christ shared with His disciples. It happened on the day of the Jewish Festival of Unleavened Bread. In the evening, Christ and the disciples gathered together to eat the Passover. It is interesting how this is the day Christ will exchange the Old Testament Passover with the New Testament Pascha.
When at the table, Jesus said to His disciples:
โ€œTruly I tell you, one of you will betray me.โ€ (Matthew 26:21)
Everyone got sad and Judas, that one disciple that will in fact betray Christ, asked Him:
โ€œSurely you donโ€™t mean me, Rabbi?โ€ (Matthew 26:25)
To which Christ simply answered, โ€œYou have said so.โ€
On Holy Thursday, we also commemorate another important event - the betrayal. Judas betrayed Christ and gave Him a kiss, which is the sign of love and friendship. This is where we see how sin changes our nature, how it rebels against God, against love and light.

What happens next has such a great meaning to every Orthodox Christian - the very first Eucharist took place:
โ€œWhile they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, โ€œTake and eat; this is my body.โ€ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, โ€œDrink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Fatherโ€™s kingdom.โ€ (Matthew 26:26-29)
The Eucharist is the new Pascha, the revelation of Godโ€™s unconditional love to us. Instead of a sacrificed lamb, we now eat Christโ€™s very Body and drink His very Blood in order to live. This is His ultimate gift to mankind; we get to experience the Kingdom and be with God here, on this earth, at the Divine Liturgy, every time we take the Holy Communion.
After Christ and His disciples shared the Mystical Supper, they went to the garden of Gethsemane where Christ prayed to God, saying:
โ€œAbba, Father,โ€ he said, โ€œeverything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.โ€ (Mark 14:36)
Even though Christ is fully God, He is also fully human, which means he was probably scared and worried because He knew what was going to happen. He came to save mankind, and we can see just how humble one must be to accept that. Christ already showed how humble He is when he washed the disciplesโ€™ feet (John 13:2-17) and His death on the cross on Friday just proved that.

On Holy Thursday, Orthodox Christians gather for a special service where the Twelve Passion Gospels are read. From these readings we find out about Christโ€™s last instructions to the disciples, the prophecy, the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and other events of Holy Thursday.

The highest nobility, the Divine, is manifested in love, and therefore Holy Thursday is the day when the love of God was manifested, when the Lord, anticipating the creation of the Church, indicated by what it would live, and how it would be created, from all over the whole world by faith in Jesus Christ, in that precisely He is the herald of the will of God, the Heavenly Father, and He wants us to unite with Him in the Holy Eucharist and to serve one another with love, carrying out that mission that He was the first on earth to carry out. Anyone, born on earth through the waters of Hoy Baptism, can become a Christian and walk the same path as Christ. This is the meaning of the Christian life. And anyone can choose it. It doesnโ€™t require a broad mind, or education, or money, or glory, or any kind of richesโ€”nothing is necessary for it. Only one thing is necessaryโ€”faith. If there is faith in Jesus Christ, then it is possible for everyone. And the Lord is ready to help every one of us on this path.

St.Tikhon of Zadonsk

Timofey Savelyevich Sokolov (1724, Novgorod region โ€“1783, Zadonskiy Nativity Virgin Monastery).
Russian Orthodox bishop and spiritual writer whom the Eastern Orthodox Church glorified (canonized) as a saint in 1861.
He forbade corporal punishment of the clergy, cared about education,  opened many schools.

The sun emits warmth equally upon all things. But some things melt from its heat, like wax, while others harden, like clay. So too, God equally benefits all and sends down the warmth of His goodness, but some people are softened by His goodness and repent, while others become hardened and perish as, for example, the Pharaoh hardened his heart and perished, โ€“ such things are done in the world even now. O man! Do you despise the riches of God's goodness, forbearance, and patience, not understanding that God's goodness leads you to repentance (Rom. 2:4)?
Beware, man, lest you harden your heart by God's goodness, but rather be moved to repentance and consider God's patience for your salvation.

Great Friday

On Great and Holy Friday, we commemorate Christโ€™s suffering and crucifixion. This is the day when our died for us, so that we can live. By dying on the cross He destroyed death itself.
On Holy Friday, we celebrate a special Vespers service, during which the priest removes the Body of Christ from the cross, wraps it in a white cloth and carries it into the altar. Then this cloth, which symbolises Christโ€™s body is placed in a bier - a symbol of a tomb.

What would you now, brethren, from the ministers of the word? The Word Himself is no more!
The Word, co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born for our salvation, the Author of every quick and powerful (Heb. 4:12) word, is silent, dead, buried, and sealed up. The more plainly and convincingly โ€œto show man the path of lifeโ€ (Ps. 16:11) this very Word came down from heaven and put on flesh; but men would not hearken unto the Word, they tear His flesh, and lo, โ€œHe is cut off out of the land of the livingโ€ (Is. 53:8). Who then shall now give unto us the word of life and salvation?

Let us hasten to confess the mystery of the Word which shall disarm His persecutors, and restore Him to souls ready to receive Him. The Word of God is not bound by death. As a word from the lips of man dies not entirely away at the moment its sound ceases, but rather gathers new strength, and passing through the senses, penetrates the minds and hearts of the hearers; so also the Hypostatical Word of God, the Son of God, in His saving incarnation, whilst dying in the flesh, โ€œfills all thingsโ€ (Eph 4:10) with His Spirit and might. Thus when Christ waxeth faint and becometh silent on the cross, then is it that heaven and earth raise their voice unto Him, and the dead preach the resurrection of the Crucified, and the very stones cry out. โ€œAnd the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; and the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept aroseโ€ (Lk 23:45; Mt 27:51-52).
Christians, the incarnate Word keepeth silence only in order to speak unto us with greater power and effect; withdraws, that He may the more inwardly โ€œdwell among usโ€ (Jn 1:14); dies, that He may grant us His inheritance
.

Great Friday

The greatness of the tomb of Christ is not diminished, brethren, by our ingratitude: The Lord remains the master of Heaven and Earth even with all our betrayals of Him. But what will happen to us if we, having lost the grace of our Baptism, donโ€™t return to it through repentance?
Instead of interceding for us, will not the all-sanctifying Blood of the Covenant cry out against us and ask for vengeance?
Thus, let us hasten while there is yet time, to be baptized again by the tears of the true repentance; let us hasten to cleanse ourselves with the Blood of the Covenant, until it ceases to flow from the Divine wounds. He calls all day, all our lives, stretching out His hands to us from the Cross; but we pay no heed and we donโ€™t come: There will come a time when some will call out to Him, but He wonโ€™t hear those who didnโ€™t listen to Him. May we not be found among them!

Amen.

Great Saturday

On Great and Holy Saturday the Orthodox Church commemorates the burial of Christ and His descent into Hades. It is the day between the Crucifixion of our Lord and His glorious Resurrection. The Matins of Holy Saturday is conducted on Friday evening, and while many elements of the service represent mourning at the death and burial of Christ, the service itself is one of watchful expectation.

On Great and Holy Saturday the Church contemplates the mystery of the Lord's descent into Hades, the place of the dead. Death, our ultimate enemy, is defeated from within.
"He (Christ) gave Himself as a ransom to death in which we were held captive, sold under sin.
Descending into Hades through the Cross ... He loosed the bonds of death" (Liturgy of St. Basil).

Great Saturday is the day of the pre-eminent rest. Christ observes a Sabbath rest in the tomb. His rest, however, is not inactivity but the fulfillment of the divine will and plan for the salvation of humankind and the cosmos. He who brought all things into being, makes all things new.
The re-creation of the world has been accomplished once and for all.
Through His incarnation, life and death Christ has filled all things with Himself He has opened a path for all flesh to the resurrection from the dead, since it was not possible that the author of life would be dominated by corruption.

Today a tomb holds Him who holds the creation in the hollow of His hand; a stone covers Him who covered the heavens with glory.
Life sleeps and hell trembles, and Adam is set free from his bonds. Glory to Thy dispensation, whereby Thou hast accomplished all things, granting us an eternal Sabbath, Thy most holy Resurrection from the dead.

Funeral Hymns of Life and Resurrection

We cannot but see with the eyes of faith that death is nothing but a dream.
Dying is terrible for him who has lost the feeling of faith, hope, and love from his soul. But, by Godโ€™s grace, we all believe, love, and trust.
For us, therefore, this tomb, these mortal veils, and this burial shroud are bright and divinely-revealing symbols and images, as the Apostle Paul says, of the trust that, when the earthly tabernacle of our body is dissolved, we will receive there, in the heavens, a different tabernacle, a house not made with hands and eternal (cf. 2 Corinthians 5:1).

Thus, the Savior commands us from the tomb to live without the fear of death, to progress in the Christian virtues, to labor in good deeds, and to attain perfection.
Increase your inner happiness and fear neither old age nor death, for the Lordโ€™s will is present with us in all things: evil, no matter how strong it might be, is weaker than good. As unpleasant as death may be, its influence is limited; beyond its limits, beyond the border of the grave, we have a heavenly fatherland; there will be activity and life after our hearts; this will be given us by Him in Whose honor we are now triumphantly singing funeral hymns of life and resurrection, for He said: he who believes shall have eternal life, for I am the resurrection and the life.

The Feast of Feasts - Pascha

The Resurrection of Christ the Redeemer is the completion of the Great Work for the redemption of mankind from enslavement to Satan and corruption; the power of sin is destroyed and Death itself is abolished. The Resurrection of Christ grants every one the right to call himself a child of God; it is the return of Paradise lost, the threshold of the Holy of Holies of immortal life and communion with God. St. Paul tells us that if there had been no Resurrection then our Christian faith would have been deprived of any foundation or value: If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.,.. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins (1 Cor. 15:14, 17).

But Christ is risen; He rose the First among the sons of earth, and thus manifested His Might and His Divine Power. Through our forefather's disobedience to God, sin took possession of human nature, and brought decay and death in its wake. But Christ abolished original sin and cleansed the fallen Adam (Eph. 1:7). With His divine blood He raises man into a new creation (1 Cor. 15:13-26).

The Holy Orthodox Church triumphs, exults and rejoices, magnifying and extolling Christ's glorious Resurrection, the great and wonderful manifestation of Divine Love and Forgiveness and the beginning of everlasting life. On this Feast of Feasts, this Triumph of Triumphs, the Holy Church exults in her love for her beloved Bridegroom, Who rose from the tomb for our salvation, and summons us, Her faithful children, to this eternal Feast of angels and men. This greatest feast, illuminated by the light from on high, is a divine prefiguration of the general resurrection of all those who have died from the beginning of time. And this is so because, as the Paschal Hymn so triumphantly proclaims: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!

Troparion of the Feast

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!

Kontakion of the Feast (Tone 8).

Thou didst descend into the tomb, O Immortal, Thou didst destroy the power of death. In victory didst Thou arise, O Christ God, proclaiming Rejoice to the myrrh bearing women, granting peace to Thy apostles, and bestowing resurrection on the fallen.

Hymn of the Resurrection.

Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless One. We venerate Thy Cross, O Christ, and we praise and glorify Thy holy Resurrection; for Thou art our God, and we know no other than Thee; we call on Thy name.

Come, all you faithful, let us venerate Christ's holy Resurrection, For behold, through the Cross joy has come into all the world. Let us ever bless the Lord, praising His Resurrection. for by enduring the Cross for us, He has destroyed death by death

CHRIST IS RISEN!

We have been forgiven and redeemed. Christ is Risen! In those three words, everything is said. In them lies the foundation of our faith, our hope, our love, the Christian life, all of our wisdom, our enlightenment, the Holy Church, sincere prayer, and all that is to come.
With those three words, all human ills โ€“ death, evil โ€“ are destroyed, and life, happiness, and freedom are given.
What miraculous power!..

Just making the response โ€œTruly He is Risen!โ€ is not, in and of itself, proof of Christ's Resurrection in us, in our hearts.
That is confirmed by our joy in the Lord and is proven by our love for Christ.
Whoever so loves understands and harbors no doubts about God's love.
However, beloved brothers and sisters, remember your recent confession, remember how you recently repented of sometimes complaining about God, doubting in His mercy, accusing the Lord of causing you undeserved sorrows and unbearable suffering, and even of not wishing to hear your prayers.
Remember how, living in sin, you tended to consider the Lord unkind, deaf, and blind to your woes and needs. Now, having united yourselves to Christ, have you recognized that He is Loving God, Merciful God, and not a punishing God? If you actually recognize that Truth, you undoubtedly understand God and His Providence, and love God with a pure heart; Christ is Risen in you, and you now can consciously respond to the joyous Christian greeting โ€œChrist is Risen!โ€ with the words โ€œTruly He is Risen!โ€
