Contrary to reports, the tanker is not owned by the US or any other foreign nation, nor is it carrying Arab crude. The tanker is Iranian, and was loaded with illegal Iranian oil, worth $12,000 in Iran – but if sold internationally, it could fetch up to $2 million. Iranians smuggling oil out of Iran to nearby countries is very common. The most common destination is Port Sikka, India, feeding the world's largest refinery, Jamnagar.

The seized tanker was last signalled at 26.7286798, 56.0064829, off the coast of Messen, heading towards Bandar Abbas.

The entire Chinese team has been disbanded as a result.
