Fighting for Chasiv Yar began on April 4, 2024, when Russian mechanized units launched an assault on the Kanal Microdistrict.

The city has been almost completely destroyed, reportedly suffering devastation on a scale exceeding that seen in Bakhmut. The withdrawal appears to have been driven by the deterioration of Ukrainian positions around Kostyantynivka, which threatened to leave the Chasiv Yar garrison cut off," - AMK Mapping.
