I'm going to say something controversial, but I'll write my heart out today.
Extremely sorry if this post hurts some sentiments, it is never intended and I respect each one of you.
I am basically a layman, but the teeny tiny recognition I get in the academic world today is something that I have earned through hard work and determination. I have just finished my 4th Year Undergrad, mechanical engineering, at Jadavpur University. And when I wear the black T-shirt with JU's logo to the left and ME (Mechanical Engineering) written on the right, it is not only a T-shirt, but it is a reward for my hard work for all these years.
It tells the story of working day and night in the Hydraulics Lab to get my research done (I am aiming for higher studies and a PhD so I was determined to publish at least one paper by the time I pass college), it tells the story of reaching the lab by 9AM every day for three months and getting out at 9PM, including Sundays, it tells the story of me arguing with the HOD that I'll be capable enough of being alone at the lab at 3AM in the night and struggling to get the keys myself as a mere undergrad, it tells the story of how I had to build my own wind tunnel for my preliminary tests because none of the tunnels at the lab worked, it tells the story of how I persuaded the professors to get the Closed Circuit Subsonic Wind Tunnel Facility up and running after being abandoned for more than 10 years, and how I struggled with dengue and a year lag and 6 supplementaries and yet managed to come back and clear all of those.
I was so stupid when I had befriended someone and had given her my JU T-shirt just because it didn't fit me and she wanted it. After the friendship broke, it didn't take me long to realize that this person (not disrespecting them btw), only uses that T-shirt to get cheap recognition. If you somehow happen to read this, just know that it is clear now why you constantly wanted to visit the JU campus, and I'll just say that while I do not have any unnecessary pride in JU, I do feel that in order to wear that T-shirt, you need to earn it. If you want to wear it, you need to work hard like my peers at JU who spent sleepless nights working on their projects, perhaps trying to make their engineering prototypes work.
JU is not the best college out there and we all are well aware of that, we have severe internal problems and we criticize JU perhaps the most. But at the same time, if someone misuses the little reputation of our college, I won't take it lightly. I mean, if you're under MAKAUT, just go and feel proud about that because this ain't the end, it's the beginning. Celebrate MAKAUT itself, no one's stopping you. Like I know this famous aeronautical engineer S. Kota, who is from Osmania university at Hyderabad, I have cited two of his papers in my own research paper which I have submitted to a Springer journal. So you see, no one bats an eye at where he's from, people care about what you do.
My point here being, just feel proud about your own achievements, perhaps it's best not to try and seek attention using someone else. Also, sorry for the long post, I have been diagnosed with cancer so I am pretty uncertain about my future, hence I simply want to write whatever I want, however I want. But here's a promise that I have made to myself, even if things go wrong, I won't leave this world before making an impactful mark in the field of aeronautics, because this is what the little 10y/o me has always wanted. I am usually not this negative, but somehow today I was a little angry after remembering the incident, so please don't mind if my words come out as harsh.
