Hello Kolkata People! Please Be Cautious With Matrimonial Sites: Sharing a Personal Experience 💔
Hello everyone,
I’m 25F from Howrah, and I want to share a very painful incident that happened to me in 2022. I am a single child, and that year, I was being forced to get married by my parents. The marriage didn’t happen eventually and thank God it didn’t but what happened in the process still hurts my heart.
We met a guy through Shaadi.com. He and his family came to our house. They were simple, sweet, and respectful. They were not very wealthy, and the guy's salary was also low, but they behaved nicely so my parents thought they were good people, my parents fixed the rishta with them.
The guy also seemed nice he used to show a lot of respect to my parents, behaved romantic with me, and everything looked okay. I had some conditions, like I would continue working after marriage and build my career. They agreed to everything.
We even fixed a destination engagement in Darjeeling. All the expenses hotel, food, everything were handled by my father alone. We were carrying some gold for the engagement. They didn’t spend anything except some basic gifts (like lipstick, mascara etc.) and ₹4000 for my engagement dress. On top of that, they asked ₹30,000 for the groom’s suit (Raymond brand), and my father agreed to that too.
But during the trip, one night my father and his father went to a bar and had 2–3 pegs. The groom’s aunty created a huge drama in the hotel because of this. We thought of cancelling the engagement right there, but she apologized and requested us not to. We decided to forgive and continue.
But when we came back home and unpacked our bags, we found that gold jewellery worth ₹14–15 lakhs was missing. We were shocked! The gold was meant for my engagement. We kept it carefully, but somehow it got stolen. Yes, I know Darjeeling has many theft cases, but we were careful. I begged my dad to go to the police, but he refused he didn’t want badnami. “Log kya kahenge?” That’s what he said.
Later, when we started planning the wedding, the groom’s aunty asked for ₹4–5 lakhs from my father to do their reception. My father was shocked. We had already suffered such a huge loss, yet they were asking for more money. My father said he can only afford ₹2 lakhs, but they kept requesting.
When I told all this to the guy, he said “I can’t do anything”, and acted very casually. That’s when I stopped talking to him.
After some time, they called off the wedding, saying “Your daughter doesn’t talk to my son, she’s not romantic, this won’t work.” Just like that, everything ended.
We were heartbroken. My mother went into trauma for almost a year. We returned all the things they gave us, and they also returned everything except the ₹30k suit. I even asked the guy for that money back, but he never sent anything. It was all a big fraud.
They were from Bankura. Till today, I regret that we trusted them.
I’m sharing this because I want all of you, specially Bengali families using matrimonial apps like Shaadi.com, to please be very careful. Even if the background check is clean (we did one too), you never really know what kind of people you might be dealing with.
Marriage is not a joke. Please don’t ignore red flags. And if anything seems fishy, don’t be afraid to say NO, even at the last moment.
Thank you for reading. Stay aware. Stay safe. 🙏🏻

The Judge Said ‘You Are No Longer Husband and Wife’ - And I Felt My Soul Leave
I still remember that precise moment when the judge said,
“From this moment, your marriage is dissolved and you are no longer husband and wife.”
I didn’t cry.
Didn’t scream.
Didn’t even blink.
Just sat there like a sack of bricks while my soul quietly packed its bags and left.
It didn’t slam the door.
It didn’t even say goodbye.
Just walked out.
And left me in that goddamn courtroom under those cheap fluorescent lights,
feeling like a meat puppet that forgot how to breathe.
From that moment on, I wasn’t a man.
I was something else.
A ghost maybe.
A leftover.
They say freedom is beautiful.
They say starting over is brave.
But they forget to mention that sometimes,
starting over feels like dragging your own coffin uphill,
with no one watching,
no one waiting at the top.
I walked out of that courthouse, hugged her one last time, and lit a cigarette with hands that didn’t feel like mine.
My spine ached.
My legs were numb.
And there was this ringing in my ears,
not from the traffic, not from the city,
but from the silence you left behind.
Seventeen years.
Seventeen years of shared groceries, half-finished arguments,
birthday calls, worn-out bedsheets, stupid inside jokes.
All signed off like a phone bill.
They make it sound so clean.
“Dissolved.”
Like it was a sugar cube in tea.
Not a whole goddamn life.
I didn’t sleep that night.
Just sat at the edge of the bed staring at a wall,
waiting for some version of myself to crawl back in.
He didn’t.
He’s probably still out there, somewhere between that courthouse and the last time you looked at me like I meant something.
I’m not angry.
Just empty.
Like someone left the tap running and forgot I was human.
