Can someone explain some Bengali wedding traditions to me please?
Background: I’m a foreigner, and my to-be husband is Bengali. We’ve recently started wedding planning. His parents shared with me the wedding rituals we will do, but due to the language barrier, they’ve been limited in how much they can explain these things to me. My partner himself isn’t really religious despite his Hindu background, so he doesn’t know much about these rituals himself. I’ve done some googling, and while there are a lot of resources about Indian wedding rituals in general, not much info is available regarding Bengali weddings specifically. I’d like to be able to explains these things to my parents and family and friends on my side so they know what to expect and the proper etiquette. If possible, can someone briefly explain a few of these wedding traditions for me? Here is what they said we’ll do:
Aiburobhat
Phool Sajya
Bride Welcoming (is it called Bodhu Boron?)
Meal with In-Laws (Bou Bhat?)
We’ll also do Mehndi, Sangeet, Haldi, and of course the do the actual Bengali Wedding rituals and Reception, but I think I already have a good understanding of them. The list above are the ones I’m unfamiliar with in Bengali culture aside from the little I found from google. What is done in these ceremonies? Which ones are open to all guests and which are reserved for only close family? What kind of attire should people wear? Or just any general tips, advice, or info regarding Bengali weddings.
