About stereotypes and demonizing

This morning I went out early for a walk and stopped by at the neighborhood tea stall. I was a bit early so I was watching the shop guy multitask with the startup activities, setting up everything while the milk for "cutting chai" simmered.

An old man, evidently Muslim, came by and sat on the bench as soon as the guy put it out, patiently waiting for a cutting chai and a biscuit. He was frail, with a long white beard, wearing a clean but rumpled white shirt and the typical lungi with checks.

He was mostly bald, with a few strands of sparse white hair blowing about in the gentle breeze. I could see his wrinkled skin and the many small moles that age usually causes. He had a melancholy expression, as expected from a man who has been poor all his life, and he paid with small loose change.

In other words, he was as human as I. This is precisely why I'm against blanket generalizations, mass stereotypes, calls for genocide or economic boycott. I acknowledge encoded problems in Islam, but I have nothing at all against the individual humans.

Car parking extortion in Shalimar station?

Last week we took a train from Shalimar at night for the first time. I went in a rented car along with a driver who dropped us off. While exiting, he called me and said I need to pay some parking charges (even though it was just a drop off).

I went there and saw some 3 guys stopping the car. They demanded I pay 50 for "parking". At first I said I don't speak their language and then they repeated the same in broken Bengali. I asked for an ID card and they said they are employed by GRP but don't have IDs. I asked for a real GRP officer and he replied "tor jonno GRP nije asbe naki?". I was very annoyed by the condescending tone and said no matter what I'm not paying a single rupee until a railway officer comes, and besides I had not even parked.

They were blocking the exit road. Our driver said please give it otherwise they won't let him go home. I got into the car and said drive along. He drove, slowly, but the goons got out of the way. I left the car outside the complex and walked back. Thankfully no one approached me.

I had a train to catch, so I did not take the time to make a complaint. Anyone else faced this? Has this extortion become the norm?
