Prelims 2023
The paper had new types of questions, definitely lengthy and more relying on probability of your guesses being correct.
See, the paper had new types of questions and everyone had the same expression after exam - "Ye kya hai, ye kyu hai, Kya iske liye mai apne life ke most precious years de raha hu" ,
but if you must know, that has been my reaction after every stage of this exam every year.
It feels impossible and uncertain at that time, but after checking ans keys/results, many must be getting 70+ even in this paper, that goes on to show that no matter what UPSC asks, you are getting marks. That is the exam.
In mains, this "Doubt on quality of paper" is even greater. Imagine being asked, "Significance of lion and bull in ancient history", "decomposition of cellulose in wild", "method of election of France's president", "aims and objectives of SCO" and many more such questions.
Nobody knows good perfect answers on these, we all just write whatever we can and then results are out, some get 110, 130 while some get 70,80 marks
But that is the thing, the exam is about being better than others and not the best. And this is a fact that Every year, UPSC gives a paper that is A Great Leveller, it bring Veterans, new aspirants etc everyone on same ground. No matter how many books one has read, one can't solve the paper easily. At the end, it comes down to Two options and you choose one and that decides your fate. That is sad and frustrating, but after 2023 results, it will be us only, who will praise the "hardwork and merit" of toppers, when we know this paper requires more than that. And every serious aspirant is working very hard.
I believe that You can't ace UPSC rather, you work as hard as you can, check all the boxes (syllabus, tests, content) and then, wait till its your time :)
But definietly, there are people consistently acing this exam and they certainly are Legendary. Because despite the uncertainties, they are qualifying this multiple times, but that is definitely not the norm.
For most of us (people who qualified this exam), we did everything that every other serious aspirant is doing, and attempts after attempt, we ultimately reached the threshold and luck favoured.
So, my advice to all is "Don't blame the paper, don't blame the random questions (as it'll weaken your spirits); just do your best and keep improving, keep writing answers, keep studying optional, keep the hopes high"
If you get in prelims, be ready to deal with an even greater monster!!!

Also, IMO, CSAT will be an equally huge Eliminator this year, if not more than GS. CSAT was the toughest and most challenging of all time. It is unfair.
Hello All,
I have tried to analyze the Prelims 2023 paper from the perspective of senior aspirant. It's not much useful for senior aspirants, but I hope fresh aspirants or who have not written prelims yet can see it and gauge the usefulness of different sources and work on their time distribution.
Feel free to engage in Constructive criticism of the review, my views might be different from yours. I'm very much delighted to hear your differences of opinion.
I have categorized questions in 4 classes -
1. Easy - too much in news, very simple, straight from books
2. Medium easy - heard/in news, we know something but not fully, we should mark it and it'll probably be right, guessable
3. Medium tough - might be in news, but we have little to no idea, we might mark it, but most probably it'll be wrong.
4. Tough/Random - never heard, can't guess either
So, earlier it was about not making Static questions wrong, but now it is about taking educated guesses and making them right as well.
We don't know right answers to many questions, I don't trust the Answer keys by non-UPSC institutions, the review is very raw and real, I may be wrong in my comments, feel free to make me right.
Best wishes.
PS - Start preparing for Mains, you're getting in or not, if you have a next attempt, Strengthen mains preparation.

Too long, but do read it
For many, yesterday was a day that shocked them to the core. Many must have got shattered by the result. I have one such story, of one of my dearest cousin brother (Chandan bhaia).
Let's go back to 2016. I had gone to my Mamaji's place, in college vacations, where Chandan Bhaia was also present. He had come from resigning from his Startup, for which he had won a national award last year (2015). Being born in Bihar, he said, now I will do UPSC.
I looked at him and said "waah bhaia, sahi h. IAS toh sbko bnna hota hai". At this time I was also preparing in my college and had finished polity NCERTs. I told him I am also reading NCERTs, and I bragged "2014 ka PYQ dekha hai maine polity ka, ncert pdh ke 16/24 sawal sahi hue" To which bhaia asked me, "India union of States hai ya federation", had noclue
Then after evening tea and snacks, bhaia went to his room to read basic UPSC books before proceeding to Delhi. I also went to his room thinking I will also study with him. We ended up watching Star Wars (1 to 5).
Next day, I had train to Guwahati, so while going, I said to bhaia "shuruat humari achi hai bhaia, Star Wars khatm kr diye hain, ab bs UPSC baki hai".
After few weeks, He went to Delhi alongwith my other cousin bhaia (different Mamaji's son), both took admission in Vajiram. Both opted for Geography optional as it was at its peak at that time. (this story is limited to Chandan bhaia).
I was in constant touch with both, asking what is happening in coaching, how are they feeling about UPSC, what's going on in ORN etc. I was continuing my prep from college.
Both bhaia gave 2017 attempt, Chandan bhaia qualified Prelims. This was huge at that time, first time someone qualified UPSC prelims in our whole family, and that too in first attempt. He became the ideal, instantly. He was the man.
Bhaia gave mains, after every paper, I called and asked about the paper, he said, "Sare questions likh diye hain ab dekhte hain", and here I was in my room with little little prep trying to make sense of Mains GS papers while Bhaia did them all. But then came optional papers and I remember asking him about how was the optional paper, He said with a sad tone " Nahi hoga Chhotu, bekaar gaya optional paper 2". I tried giving him hope, said, bhaia, tough sabke liye hoga, apka baki sab acha hua hai, ye bhi sahi rahega! But as optional would have it, bhaia didn't qualify Mains 2017, but was very close. He was also determined that whatever shortcoming were there in this attempt, I won't leave any stone unturned in next one.
2018, the year when I entered UPSC. I could solve only 59 ques in prelims, on the other hand, our third bhaia solved 97 ques, he said He couldn't stop. Chandan bhaia solved around 85ish, and ultimately only Chandan bhaia qualified Prelims, again.
I too moved to ORN after prelims 2018, for my optional coaching. So we three brothers started living in Delhi. Chandan Bhaia would visit ORN from patel nagar for tests every week. He gave lots of tests, performed very good in all of them. Worked on his optional. Gave mains 2018, and me and other bhaia went to his centre on last day of mains to go to some good place to eat. We reached the place, he was already there, and He looked sad. I asked bhaia, kaisa raha, He said "Geography le dooba". Paper 1 kya tha. He and other bhaia started having discussion on paper, ki kya likhna tha, kya pucha tha. We again tried to tell him, let's see what happens, all hopes are not lost. As optional would have it, he didn't qualify mains 2018.
In 2019, all three of us qualified prelims. Now it was time for mains. Both bhaias were giving tests and they had very good preparation. I, on the other hand, was lacking far behind. I wasn't able to give any test as I felt I don't know anything, what to do in test, it's better if I study the things. I was studying chemistry, monthlys, static etc. I had no hopes for myself, but it was ok, I felt this time both bhaia ka ho jayega, apna agle baar. As mains results came, we called each other, the result was synchronous - Out Out Out.

As mains results came, we called each other, the result was synchronous - Out Out Out.
Then 2020, I qualified prelims again, chandan bhaia too and third bhaia got held due to Csat. I and chandan bhaia were to give mains, again he started doing the tests, content, optional, 2 monthly magazines (vision+rao), notes on every things etc. I scored 704 in mains this time, and bhaia scored 730, cutoff was 734. Again He didn't qualify mains.
Now he was thinking what went wrong, and the obvious culprit was Geography. So in 2021, he filled UPSC form with PSIR optional.
From March 2021, he started studying PSIR optional, no coaching, on his own. With notes etc. Before 2021 prelims, he gave tests of PSIR of few topics. I used to worry about prelims ki kaise hoga and bhaia was giving optional test series a week before prelims. Third bhaia had meanwhile got Rank 29 in CAPF, so he skipped 2021 attempt. I and Chandan bhaia gave 2021 attempt, I had little hopes from Chemistry now coz of 2020 debacle but I thought let's try this one last time. We both qualified prelims. I again gave few tests at centre, would take 4 hours minimum in completing a test and had a lot of inertia. Bhaia on the other hand, would easily write all tests within 3 hours. He did all the things that every topper was saying, essay ke intro conclusion examples prepare, ethics ke notes ready, GS current affairs notes, and tried his best with PSIR optional. 2021 mains results came one day before Holi (16th march I think). Pehle photos aayi thi, unclear si... My friend Siddharath (Panda) said "tera ho gaya" I texted "good joke". I checked and I could faintly see my roll number, It was definitely my roll number and I was on cloud 9. I couldn't believe that I have qualified Mains. The exam that looked the toughest. Chandan bhaia called, and I exclaimed "Bhaia, mera ho gya h, aapka bhi ho hi gaya hoga mera ho gya h toh" But sadly, bhaia didnt qualify. He congratulated me, and said interview ka ache se tayari karo, kuch help chahy ho toh btana. I said Han bhaia, jaan laga dena h.
In 2022, Bhaia chose to give only Forest service because he wanted break to prepare for mains. So he gave only Forest exam. He qualified Forest prelims. It was exceptional, like, we know one can get CSM cutoff by preparation, uske upar toh luck hai, but bhaia beat that luck. He studied for Forest service exam, meanwhile doing Masters in Political science. He didn't qualify forest service mains, as he had to study two new optionals (Geology and Forestry). He had good preparation but Geology ditched this time.
Now it was Bhaia's 6th attempt of Civil Services. The year is 2023. After paper 1, I called and asked his Haal chaal, he said, han thik hi tha!! Hum log ab kahan inn shocks se shock hote hain. I replied, Han bhaia. Sahi h!
After Csat paper, I had many friends who were feeling devastated so I hurriedly called Bhaia, to ask his status. He said, "50 ques attempt kie hai, mostly Maths". I was relieved coz 50 toh safe hai in csat.
After checking with keys, he was getting 104-110 in GS paper. And in CSAT he was getting 68-74. He was worried that CSAT na ruk jaye. I told him that "iss stress me abhi ka time waste ni karna hai bhaia, av hi headstart lena h, bahut hain GS me, csat 68 pe bhi rha toh bhi dikkat nahi hai".
Yesterday, I searched his name and it said "No result found". I realized that The worst had happened.
Bhaia, jo pehla pre nikale the, aaj tak koi pre nahi ruka jinka, wrote 7 mains consecutively (5 CSM + 2 forest), Aj his journey ended. Due to CSAT. After 50 attempts.
Issue was Maths. He is good in maths, but this time the paper was such that one can easily make mistakes in Maths. Iss baar maths dependable nahi tha.
But humne toh 2020 prelims dekha tha, jis time English doable nahi tha. Fir uske baad se Maths pe hi rely kr rhe the bhaia, coz 'Author ka kya assumption hai' ye toh galat ho sakta hai.
I don't know how he does it, but he ensures to everyone that He had made peace with it. He proclaimed Now I am free of UPSC.
I wish him All the best for his upcoming new beginnings.

Honestly, if it was not for him, I wouldn't have gotten selected. Wo itne upar the mujhse preparation me, ki I could never even aim to get to his level. Mere se ek monthly nahi sambhal rahi thi, bhaia do kar rahe the. Mere se 5 test nahi likhe ja rahe the, bhaia 15 likh chuke the. Mere se ek optional nahi ho raha tha, bhaia 2 mains k liye, 2 forest k liye (total 4) kr chuke the.
But nahi tha kismat me. This is pure kismat. But this is Life.
This is UPSC, it's brutal. It's ruthless.
And a fact - koi difference nahi hai Toppers me aur serious Mains candidates me in terms of knowledge. Hum sab same chije pdhte hain aur same chije likhte hain
UPSC me aisa nahi hai ki, jiska nikla sirf usi ne mehnat ki h! Mehnat sbhi kr rhe hain, jiska nahi nikla, jaruri nahi ki uski mehnat me kami thi. Bs uske takdeer me likha nahi tha!!
And it either gives you a Service Or nothing. There's no in between. It's not like JEE ki, IIT nahi mila toh, NIT ya IIIT mil jaye! Wo bhi ni toh SRM, VIT, LPU. Like, kuch na kuch mil jata hai. But yaha nahi!! Ye alag hai.
Bahut lambi kahani ho gayi, but kya kare, journey bhi toh lambi thi!
I'll post all his marksheets subsequently.
I know thodi discouraging story ho sakti hai for fresh aspirants, but I had to share. And discourage mat ho, just give your best and fir Jo mila, wo sahi.
One of my batchmates says - "UPSC sabse sasta nasha hai, 100rs pe milta hai, saal bhar chalta hai".
Keep hustling, keep growing!
Jeena isi ka naam hai!
Sangharsh path pe jo bhi mila, wo hi sahi
Bas Haara wahi, jo kabhi lada nahi

Now in dilemma to continue for upsc (terrified by prelims pattern this year) or to focus on bpsc to be held in September.
My Suggestions-
1. Her marks in mocks show that even her basics are not very clear. So, with this knowledge clearing even bpsc doesn't seem realistic. (Given only 2.5 months time is left). So I suggested her to give more focus on upsc prelims by giving her a detailed chart. For the next two months, I advised her to read and re-read basic GS static notes & books and attempt as many mocks as possible. This will be necessary for even bpsc exam.
I suggested to her that after doing this, she should give 20 days completely to her bpsc prep. ( So that even if she didn't qualify bpsc, not much time will be lost).
Meanwhile I advised her to join a proper class for CSAT( maths part) to cover the basics in the next 2 months that she can continue to practice the whole year for 1 hour per day. ( As for her maths is very difficult and fragmented study from here and there will lead her nowhere)
Told her to meet me again after doing these things and bpsc exam to see her progress and then suggest accordingly for mains prep.
May Lord Ram always bless her in her endeavours in life.
