Australian's have currently got it hard. Swathes of the country are living under strict lockdown conditions in response to an insanely low number of alleged Covid-19 cases, hospitalisations and deaths. But it would seem those who have decided to get the Covidโฆ

This is what a biodiversity emergency looks looks like. Myself and my dad held a farm walk last Friday to highlight the absolute destruction of nature and loss of farm land around Lough Funshinagh. Many thanks to the over 80+ people who attended. These images, a snapshot of the 40+ farms affected, were taken Sunday morning and show the clear high water mark of the 04th April when the lake reached 69.25m OD (above sea level) as of today it is at 67.73m.
A summer time fall of only 1.5m.

For perspective that's the same height as mid December last year. Historically the lake starts to rise about now due to autumn being wetter and less warm. So we are living in a constant state of emergency.
The waters are approx 0.6m higher than this day last year. With a normal winters rain all the forest pictured will be drowned. Likely the trees dead already will be washed into the lake and acidified further. The Hedgerows currently alive (just, after being severely stunted last winter) will be washed away. That's a lot of birds, bees and insects that are currently getting set for hibernation whom will be homeless mid winter.
The Friends of the Irish Environment seem to think they are protecting something by their work to stop an overflow pipe in the high courts last month. However with the lake at the current levels this winter, biodiversity will continue to be extinguished, my neighbours continue to live with the threat of eviction and the Friends of the Irish Environment continue to destroy the name of environmentalists everywhere who want to make the natural world a better place.
The ONLY solution is to remove the excess water from the top of the lake and end this EMERGENCY once and for all.
