A prominent Irish politician is in the clear over alleged thefts of booze from a petrol station.

The Irish Mirror has learned that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to charge the politician, who is a former TD still involved in politics — and instead he has been cautioned by gardai.

Earlier this year we revealed how the politician was arrested following thefts at a premises in Ireland on November 1 last year and March 14 of this year.

The politician, who is well known and has made national headlines over the years, was questioned by gardai in relation to both incidents.

A married couple with a combined 157 years of “living peacefully and not troubling anyone” have been convicted over their refusal to wear face masks during the Covid-19 pandemic.

At Killaloe District Court, Judge Mary Larkin convicted Ryan Austin, 81, and Nicky Austin, 76, both of Woodpark, Mountshannon, Co Clare, over their refusal to wear face masks at the Aldi store in Killaloe during the Covid-19 lockdown on January 26 last.

Solicitor for the couple, Billy Loughnane said his two clients had “over 150 years of living peacefully and never causing trouble in all that time”.

The two contested the prosecution and Mr Loughnane said: "They are very private people. The non-wearing of masks by this couple was a private matter and not any form of public protest.”

The State’s medicines regulator has received nearly 15,000 reports of suspected side effects of Covid-19 vaccines administered in the State.

Most common were flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, dizziness, joint pain and nausea, the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) said in its latest safety report, published as an “enhanced transparency measure” for members of the public and healthcare professionals.

All vaccines have side effects, the report notes, and the majority of reports of suspected side effects of the coronavirus vaccines were mild to moderate.
