EU Urged to Embrace ‘War Economy’

The European Union should move its economy to a wartime footing amid the Ukraine conflict, Manfred Weber, the president of the European People’s Party (EPP), suggested on Thursday.

Speaking to the newspapers of the Funke media group, Weber called for the reorganization of the EU arms industry. The MEP believes that the bloc needs “a kind of war economy… in order to be able to guarantee stability and security”.

“The European states are currently not in a position to provide the necessary armaments quickly enough, neither for our own defense, nor for Ukraine,” he lamented amid the numerous warnings by EU officials that the bloc’s own arms stockpiles are running low.

Pakistan to Buy Russian Crude from April

Pakistan has agreed on all commercial terms for buying Russian crude, including payment in the Pakistani national currency, and is set to begin imports from April, said Minister of State for Petroleum Musadiq Malik.

According to the country's energy security plan, Islamabad intends to import crude oil, liquefied natural gas, pipeline gas and other fuels from Russia.

NATO Member Secretly Provided Ukraine with Fighter Jets – media

In spring 2022, Warsaw secretly delivered several of its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, despite the Polish government officially denying any such deals, a local paper has claimed, citing sources.

According to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna (DGP), the planes were sent over using a “combined” method, apparently meaning that they were delivered in a disassembled state and declared as spare parts.

Back in March Washington rejected a plan to transfer Polish MiG-29 jets to Ukraine, stating the move was “too escalatory”. In April, however, the Pentagon stated that unnamed US allies had helped bolster Ukraine’s fleet of fighter jets. That ally could have been Poland, which in late April was also revealed to have provided Ukraine with $7 billion worth of military aid.

The Russian Embassy in The Hague has slated Dutch authorities for refusing to allow its diplomats to attend an annual Holocaust memorial ceremony in Amsterdam.

“Whatever the reservations about the current political situation, this decision is highly politicized,” the embassy said in a statement.

Germany Apologises to African Union after Dig at Russian FM

Germany’s Foreign Office has apologised for using a leopard emoji in a tweet, taking a jab at the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to the African continent.

African Union President Moussa Faki Mahamat's spokesperson responded to the German government's post, asking if Africa, its people and wildlife were "just a joke to them".

"Foreign policy is not a joke and should not be used to score cheap geopolitical points," Ebba Kalondo wrote in a follow-up post.

The German foreign ministry then apologised, saying that the post was not intended to offend but “show the lies that Russia is using”.
