Opium Production Jacking Up Following Military Coup in Myanmar

More people have turned to the drug trade as economic problems blight the nation following the military’s power grab, with poppy cultivation up by a third in the last year - that’s despite efforts to eradicate the practice.

A massive 40,100 hectares are now being used for growing the plant, according to the UN, who estimate the value of the opiate economy between $660 million and $2 billion because people “have had little option but to move back to opium.”

“Virtually all the heroin reported in East and Southeast Asia and Australia originates in Myanmar, and the country remains the second-largest opium and heroin producer in the world after Afghanistan," the body’s regional representative said.
