‘Homosexuality A Sin But Not A Crime’ — Pope Francis

Pope Francis slammed laws that criminalized homosexuality and urged bishops who support such legislation to welcome LGBT people into their church in a Tuesday interview with the AP.

Francis claimed cultural backgrounds were responsible for some bishops’ support for anti-LGBTQ laws - which he declared “unjust” - before adding homosexuality “is not a crime… but it’s a sin.”

The Vatican’s doctrine office decreed in 2021 that the Catholic Church could not bless same-sex unions “because God cannot bless sin.”

Zelensky Sanctions Top Orthodox Clerics

Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky has ordered personal sanctions on senior figures in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). The Kiev government launched a crackdown on the denomination last year, claiming it harbored Russian agents.

The list includes the Metropolitan (Bishop), the senior cleric in Ukraine’s most prominent Orthodox monastery. It also targets several priests of the Russian Orthodox Church whose parishes are located in Crimea.

The UOC, which has historical ties with the Russian Orthodox Church, has been targeted by a crackdown since November. The domestic security agency (SBU) started raiding monasteries and other church property, reportedly looking for evidence of collusion with Russia. The agency alleged that churches might hide saboteurs, stockpile weapons, or be involved in treason.

NATO ‘Not Party to Ukraine Conflict’ — Secretary General Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told German outlet Die Welt on Wednesday that the US-led organization is not a party to the conflict in Ukraine and insisted it had no plans to be.

He claimed that NATO was not sending troops or aircraft to Kiev and was within its rights to help Ukraine protect its borders under the UN charter.

Boosting a military presence on Europe’s eastern flank, Stoltenberg added, would make Moscow understand NATO’s determination to defend the bloc’s territory.

Bank of Canada Hikes Interest Rates To 15-Year High

The Bank of Canada on Wednesday raised its key interest rate to 4.5%, the highest level in 15 years.

In the last ten months, the bank has raised rates at a record pace of 425 basis points to curb inflation, which has slowed to 6.3%.

"Governing Council is prepared to increase the policy rate further if needed to return inflation to the 2% target," the bank said in its quarterly Monetary Policy Report.
