13 Rescued From Sunken HK Cargo Ship Off Japan

Despite media reports indicating all 22 crew members from a Hong Kong-registered cargo ship that sank late Tuesday off the coast of Japan had been picked up by lifeboats, the Japanese Coast Guard only confirmed 13 had been rescued.

Planes and vessels are still searching for the remaining nine crew members after the lumber-carrying vessel encountered trouble in strong winds before sinking at 2:46 am local time (17:46 GMT Tuesday).

South Korean Coast Guards have also been brought in to assist with efforts to rescue the crew, all of whom are either Chinese or Myanmar nationals.

China Hits Back At US Over Treasury Secretary Africa Remarks

The Chinese Embassy in Zambia suggested Tuesday that the US first sort out its debt problems after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Beijing was a โ€œbarrierโ€ to debt reform in Africa.

The missionโ€™s statement urged Washington to โ€œstop sabotaging other sovereign countriesโ€™ active efforts to solve their issuesโ€ and focus on addressing its $31 trillion national debt.

Zambia defaulted on its debt in 2020 and has struggled to restructure repayments. The World Bank, meanwhile, estimates the worldโ€™s poorest countries faced $35 billion in debt-service payments in 2022, over 40% of which is due to China.

Japan is the most illustrative. Until recently, the country was reluctant to peddle a militant attitude either in terms of weaponry or even in using economic pressure. Things are changing, and this is a strong indicator of the transformation of the international arena.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has just completed a tour of...
