NGO Fortify Rights is leading an effort to have the military tried for alleged war crimes under universal jurisdiction

A total of 16 survivors and witnesses of ethnic violence in Myanmar have sued several senior figures in the country’s military, alleging crimes against humanity including genocide.

They filed the complaint on Friday in partnership with NGO Fortify Rights in German federal court, citing the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows mass atrocities in one country to be prosecuted anywhere.

Finland Mulls Solo NATO Membership Bid

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto seemed to suggest on Tuesday his country may push ahead with its bid to join NATO without Sweden, claiming “we still have to evaluate the situation if it turns out that Sweden’s application is stalling for a long time to come.”

His comments come a day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Sweden it “can no longer expect any charity from us regarding their NATO membership application,” after the “vileness” of pro-Kurdish Koran-burning demonstrations outside Ankara’s embassy in Stockholm.

Haavisto’s Swedish counterpart Tobias Billstrom said “We are in contact with Finland to find out what is really meant.”
