Sweden is banning entry for travelers from the United States, Israel and four other countries due to rising COVID-19 rates, according to Swedish media.

The temporary travel ban to the Scandinavian country goes into effect on September 6 and expires on October 31 unless extended.

The New York area struggled on Thursday to overcome a devastating and deadly rainstorm brought on by the remnants of Hurricane Ida as local leaders acknowledged that the region would need to adjust to a reality in which extreme weather events were the norm.

At least 23 people were killed by the storm, which left more than 150,000 homes in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania without power. A tornado in southern New Jersey levelled a stretch of houses. States of emergency remained in effect across the region by midday on Thursday, as officials sought to get a handle on the unanticipated damage.

A Covid-positive man absconded from a managed quarantine facility in central Auckland on Thursday, prompting New Zealand police to respond to the incident in full protective equipment.

Officers surrounded and cordoned off an address in ลŒtฤhuhu, south Auckland, after being told of the escape from the facility in Ellerslie, about 10km away (six miles) away. The person was was later arrested.

Superintendent Steve Kehoe said: โ€œPolice are liaising with the Ministry of Health on this matter to understand this personโ€™s movements since he left the MIQ [managed isolation and quarantine] facility.

โ€œStaff responding to this incident are dressed in full PPE. All police staff who have responded to this incident have been following all health guidelines, in accordance with police Covid-19 procedures.โ€

US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has started giving people doses of a pill against COVID-19 as part of a new clinical trial.

The company's oral antiviral treatment has entered a mid-to-late-stage trial and is being tested on adults with COVID-19 symptoms who have not been treated in hospital and are not at risk of becoming severely ill.

Pfizer is one of several drug manufacturers hoping to develop the first antiviral pill to be taken for early signs of the illness.
