EU State Breaks Ranks On Russian Assets
Estonia will not wait for an all-EU decision and will devise its own framework for confiscating Russian assets blocked by Brussels in response to Moscowโs military intervention in Ukraine, the countryโs foreign minister, Urmas Reinsalu, said.
โEuropean countries have instructed the European Commission to create a legal scheme that would allow the use of frozen assets for the aid and recovery of Ukraine. But there is no consensus on this issue yet,โ Reinsalu told the newspaper Postimees on Wednesday.
โWe have discussed this in the government and decided that, in parallel with [the EU], we will start devising a legal framework that would allow us to use these funds,โ the minister said, adding that the move could create a precedent for international law.

Moscow Warns Of Retaliation If Germany Goes Through With Asset Seizure
The proposed confiscation of Russian funds and property by Germany and their subsequent transfer to Ukraine may create a dangerous precedent in international law, Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the State Duma, Russiaโs lower house of parliament, has said.
In a post on Thursday to his official Telegram channel, Volodin wrote that the measure runs counter to international law, and may lead other countries to take similar actions.
โThey plan to seize Russian assets to rebuild Ukraineโฆ This will start a process where all states ignore international law and take what they see fit at their own discretion,โ Volodin warned, adding that Germanyโs leadership โshould remember from their own countryโs history how attempts to encroach on someone elseโs property ended.โ

Days before ๐บ๐ธ President Joe Biden is due to visit, ๐ฒ๐ฝ authorities took down Ovidio Guzman, son of Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman who is currently jailed in the United States.
Cartel gunmen blocked roads in Culiacan and attempted to rescue the 32-year-old amid gun battles with security forces. Authorities reported seven security force personnel killed, 29 people wounded - including 8 civilians.
Guzman was flown to Mexico City, despite cartel attacks on Culiacan airport, one of which hit an Aeromexico flight which was due to fly to the capital. The airline reported no injuries.

The primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has called on the forces of both Russia and Ukraine to cease hostilities in the run-up to and during Christmas. Both Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox faithful traditionally celebrate the holiday on January 7.
In a statement on Wednesday, Patriarch Kirill addressed to โall parties embroiled in internal strifeโฆan appeal to cease fire and establish a Christmas truce from 12:00 on January 6 to 24:00 on January 7.โ
The purpose of the ceasefire would be to enable the Orthodox faithful โto attend services on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day,โ Kirill stated.
