Economists Issue Grim 2023 Forecast

The globe will slide into a recession next year as a number of economies will contract due to surging borrowing costs introduced to combat inflation, the UK-based Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) has predicted in its latest report.

The world economy surpassed $100 trillion for the first time ever in 2022 but will stall in 2023 as “the battle against inflation is not won yet,” while regulators will keep raising interest rates, the consultancy said in its annual World Economic League Table.

“We expect central bankers to stick to their guns in 2023 despite the economic costs. The cost of bringing inflation down to more comfortable levels is a poorer growth outlook for a number of years to come,” the director and head of forecasting at CEBR, Kay Daniel Neufeld, wrote.

Ukraine Warns Germany Of ‘Russians Outside Berlin’

Should Germany fail to provide Ukraine with tanks, it will soon have to use them to defend its own capital from advancing Russian troops, Alexey Danilov, the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, warned on Wednesday.

Speaking to Ukrainian TV, Danilov took a swipe at Germany’s leadership, particularly at Chancellor Olaf Scholz, criticizing him for refusing to send Kiev modern Leopard 2 battle tanks.

If Scholz “wants the Germans to deploy German tanks to fight off the Russians outside of Berlin and Stuttgart, he could continue this game, conducting sociological surveys on whether they need to give us tanks or not,” he said.

Japan Comments On ‘Even Stronger’ Alliance With US

Japan is seeking to strengthen its military ties with the US, the country’s prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has said ahead of a visit to Washington. His statement came amid tensions between the US and China over Taiwan and as North Korea has ramped up missile tests.

“We will show to the rest of the world an even stronger Japan-US alliance, which is a lynchpin of Japanese security and diplomacy,” Kishida told reporters on Wednesday, as quoted by the Associated Press. “We will also show our further cooperation toward achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Kishida will meet with President Joe Biden in Washington on January 13.

Australia Rejects Ukrainian Calls For Russian Tennis Ban

The Australian Open has doubled down on its stance that Russian players will be free to compete at this year’s tournament under neutral status, after calls from Ukrainian officials for them to be banned entirely.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, demanded this week that officials at Tennis Australia (TA) should adopt the same position as British tennis showpiece Wimbledon and prevent Russian players from competing.

In response, TA dismissed those calls by repeating that the likes of former men’s world number one Daniil Medvedev and his compatriots will be allowed to line up at the Australian Open later in January.

“Players from Russia and Belarus are only able to compete in international tennis events as individuals – and without flags or country recognition – which will be the case for Australian O...

Iran Summons French Ambassador Over ‘Disgusting’ Cartoons

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned Paris’ ambassador to the country over cartoons in a French magazine that insulted both the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the nation’s religious practices. Though the ministry did not name the magazine, it was apparently referring to Charlie Hebdo, which is notorious for satirical attacks on Islam.

In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said Ambassador Nicolas Roche had been summoned and that a “a strong protest” had been filed with the French government. He added that Tehran would not “accept any insult to Islamic as well as its national and religious values.”
