US Approves Experimental Bee Vaccine

The US Department of Agriculture has granted a conditional license to the first-ever vaccine for bees, Dalan Animal Health announced on Wednesday. The Athens, Georgia-based company has developed an oral prophylactic they hope will be effective against a highly destructive spore-transmitted bacterial infection.

“Our vaccine is a breakthrough in protecting honeybees,” Dalan CEO Dr. Annette Kleiser said in a statement, suggesting it might “change how we care for insects, impacting food production on a global scale.”

American Foulbrood is a bacterial infection transmitted to bee larvae by spores. While antibiotic treatment can mitigate the impact to adult bees, US regulations adopted almost a century ago require the burning of an infected colony.

Serbia Issues Grim Prediction For 2023

The US, EU and China face serious economic struggles in 2023, which is shaping up to be more difficult than the previous year, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic warned on Wednesday. Belgrade is trying to stock up on basic food supplies, as the world is likely to face shortages soon, he added.

“I expect 2023 to be much more difficult than 2022,” Vucic told reporters in Belgrade. The US federal reserve has raised interest rates, “China’s growth rate has slowed, the EU is approaching a recession,” he added. “We’re a part of that chain, so that will impact us as well.”

Serbia has taken precautions to stock up on natural gas and coal, and should have some left over by the spring, Vucic said, but he is working with Hungary to “secure supplies right away for the next winter, which will be worse.”

Ukrainian troops have shelled a residential area in the city of Vasilyevka in Russia’s newly incorporated Zaporozhye region, killing six people and injuring 37, the acting governor, Yevgeny Balitsky, said on Wednesday.

He added that three first responders were among the wounded, including one in critical condition.

US First Lady Plans Surgery After Cancer Screening

US First Lady Jill Biden will undergo surgery to remove a skin lesion spotted during a recent cancer screening, her office said, noting the procedure will take place at a military hospital in the nation’s capital later this month.

White House physician Kevin O’Connor announced the upcoming operation on Wednesday, saying a lesion was discovered above the first lady’s right eye during a “routine skin cancer screening.”

“In an abundance of caution, doctors have recommended that it be removed,” O’Connor said, adding that Biden will “undergo a common outpatient procedure known as Mohs surgery to remove and definitively examine the tissue.”

The operation is set for January 11.
