Fake Phone To Cure Smartphone Addiction To Launch In Japan

Are you addicted to holding a rounded rectangle of plastic? Then curb your addiction with this slightly less functional rounded rectangle of plastic. The AcryPhone is a piece of black acrylic that is designed to help ween you off your smartphone addiction by giving you something phone shaped to hold in your hand. It has no screen, no speakers, no electronics and no headphone jack (ok, that one is quite realistic), although for 220 yen extra ($1.50) you can have an optional screen protector to pick away at. You can even get a case for it that looks a bit like it has camera lenses, all the better to stop people yelling โ€˜why is that maniac playing with a pretend phone?โ€™

The AcryPhone is being launched by Japanese company eKod Works next month. If you canโ€™t wait that long to pose with a good-looking but functionally worthless...

Twitter Announces Decision On Political Advertisements

Twitter is set to relax its ban on political advertising, saying the policy change would take effect in the coming weeks. The announcement follows reports of an exodus of advertisers from the website after Muskโ€™s multi-billion-dollar takeover last year.

The platformโ€™s Twitter Safety account highlighted the decision on Tuesday, noting that it would soon โ€œalign our advertising policy with that of TV and other media outletsโ€ regarding political material.

โ€œToday, we're relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US. We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks,โ€ it said, adding โ€œWe believe cause-based advertising can facilitate public conversation around important topics.โ€

UK To Suffer More Than Most This Year โ€” FT

Britain faces one of the worst recessions among the worldโ€™s leading industrialized nations this year, the Financial Times has reported, citing economists.

In an annual poll of 101 leading UK-based economists, the majority told the outlet that the fallout from spiralling inflation, triggered by the pandemic and the Ukraine conflict, will persist for longer in the UK than in other G7 nations, and the countryโ€™s recovery will be one of the weakest. GDP will shrink for most of 2023, the government will have to run a tight fiscal policy, and the Bank of England will keep interest rates high, the report said.

John Philpott, an independent labour market economist, told FT that โ€œthe 2023 recession will feel much worse than the economic impact of the pandemic.โ€ Other respondents described the outlook for consumers โ€“ especially those on low income...
