For Palestinians, 2022 Was a Year of Renewed Tragedy and New Hope
MintPress News (RSS)

Another critical year for Palestine has folded. While 2022 has wrought much of the same in terms of Israeli military occupation and increasing violence, it also introduced new variables to the Palestinian struggle โ€“ nationally, regionally and internationally.

Palestine, the War and the Arabs
The Russia-Ukraine war starting in February, pressured many political entities, including Palestinians, to take sides or, at least, to declare a position. Though the Palestinian Authority (PA) and various Palestinian political parties insisted on their neutrality, Russiaโ€™s deviation...

The call follows a scandal triggered by Christine Lambrecht's NYE greetings

The leaders of Germanyโ€™s largest opposition party โ€“ the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) โ€“ and their Bavarian allies, have demanded Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht be fired amid a scandal over her New Yearโ€™s Eve address.

Lambrecht has landed in hot water over her comments on Instagram that the conflict in Ukraine had brought her many โ€œspecial impressionsโ€ and allowed to meet many โ€œinteresting and great people.โ€ Her speech was immediately lambasted by opposition politicians and journalists as...

Russian drones far cheaper than Ukrainian air defenses โ€“ NYT
RT World News (RSS)

Such an imbalance may cost Kiev and its Western allies dearly, the paper warns

The fact that the smaller kamikaze drones used by Russia are much cheaper than the Ukrainian air defense missiles used against them is creating problems for Kiev and its Western backers, the New York Times has acknowledged.

In an article on Tuesday, the paper didnโ€™t question Kievโ€™s claims that most of the UAVs launched by Russia are being shot down, but pointed out that even in this case Ukrainian air defense stocks were being exhausted....

Documents Reveal How โ€˜Russiagateโ€™ Was Used For Twitter Censorship

Internal documents from Twitter made public on Tuesday show how the social media platform was pressured to follow the US intelligence communityโ€™s lead on censorship back in 2017. Key Democrats in the US Congress, a British university, and two media outlets โ€“ Politico and BuzzFeed โ€“ played a major role in constructing and amplifying the โ€˜Russiagateโ€™ conspiracy theory, according to research by Matt Taibbi.

In a pattern established in just six weeks, from August to October 2017, Twitter went from being on nobodyโ€™s radar to agreeing to take orders from US spies as to whom to censor, Taibbi wrote on Substack.

โ€œThreats from Congress came first, then a rush of bad headlines (inspired by leaks from congressional committees), and finally a series of moderation demands coming from the outside,โ€ he added.

โ—๏ธFirst Ship With Russian Zircon Missiles Placed On Combat Duty

The first Russian warship carrying Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, the frigate โ€˜Admiral Gorshkov,โ€™ began routine combat service on Wednesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw the ceremony via video link. He said that the Zircon missile was a โ€œunique weaponโ€ and that โ€œno other country has anything comparable.โ€

โ€œI am sure that such a powerful armament will allow us to steadfastly defend Russia from potential foreign threats. It will help to maintain the national interests of our country,โ€ Putin stated.

According to Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, the frigate will conduct โ€œa voyage in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea.โ€

Main Adversary Of Russiaโ€™s First President

Ruslan Khasbulatov, one of the most powerful men in the early days of post-Soviet Russia, has died in Moscow Region at the age of 80, media reports, citing his relatives.

The politician and economist led the first Russian parliament and supported Boris Yeltsin, who was yet to become the country's first president, in his standoff against junta coup plotters who sought to grab power in the USSR in 1991. However, just two years after Khasbulatov and Yeltsin stood side by side against the attempted coup, they turned against each other, sparking the 1993 constitutional crisis.

EU Gas Prices Fall To Lowest Level In Over A Year

The cost of gas futures for February delivery at the TTF hub in the Netherlands was down more than 5% to $733 per thousand cubic meter or โ‚ฌ67 ($71.1) per megawatt hour (MWh) in household terms early on Wednesday morning, before climbing slightly back up.

Despite the current decline, gas prices remain several times higher than the long-term average.

Russian Electricity Exports To Asia Growing โ€” Minister

Russiaโ€™s electricity supplies to China and Mongolia will see an overall 20% jump by the end of this year, Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov has said.

Estimates by the Russian energy giant Inter RAO suggest that the country has supplied a record 4.4-4.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electrical power to China in 2022. Data shows that Chinaโ€™s electricity consumption had risen in December due to colder weather. This has also pushed demand for coal and gas for heating higher.

โ€œThis year [2022] we can talk about the growth of eastbound [electricity] exports, that is, total exports to China and Mongolia have increased by 20%, and there will be an uptick of about 16% to China by the end of the year,โ€ Shulginov revealed last week in an interview with the TV channel Rossiya-24.

For a short while this information was on Twitter, but almost immediately censored. Nothing has changed under Musk as you know, so well.
