Lula Halts Privatization Of Brazilโ€™s State Companies โ€” Media

Brazilโ€™s newly returned President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has scrapped plans to sell off eight state-run corporate giants, including the oil company Petroleo Brasileiro, known as Petrobras, Brazilian news website G1 reported.

Lula, who was at the helm from 2003 through 2010, was sworn in as Brazilโ€™s president on January 1. Imprisoned for graft in 2018, Lula's convictions were overturned in 2019, allowing him to defeat Jair Bolsonaro in October's election.

The decision to remove state corporations from the list of state asset sales was one of the first official acts by the left-wing politician.

French โ€˜Oscarsโ€™ Introduces Major Change

The French Cesar Academy, which hands out the nationโ€™s most prestigious film award, has decided not to invite to its ceremony anyone who has been convicted of or even who is being charged with acts of violence, particularly in sex crimes.

In a statement, the academy said that, out of respect for victims, even presumed ones, โ€œit has been decided not to highlight people who are either indicted on or sentenced for acts of violence, notably of a sexual or sexist nature.โ€

Such people โ€œcannot be invited to the Ceremony, nor to any of the events associated with it and organized by the Cesar Academy,โ€ the statement read, adding that โ€œno one will be allowed to speak on their behalfโ€ either.

German Defense Chief Slammed Over โ€˜Inappropriateโ€™ Message On Ukraine

Germanyโ€™s defense minister, Christine Lambrecht, has been roundly criticized after publishing a New Yearโ€™s Eve greeting in which she touched upon the ongoing conflict in Ukraine against the backdrop of festive fireworks in Berlin. The message was broadly slammed as an โ€œembarrassmentโ€ and prompted opposition politicians and some journalists to call for her resignation.

โ€œA war is raging in the middle of Europe,โ€ the minister says at one point, without even mentioning Russia or Ukraine. Lambrecht then goes on to say that over the past year she has had โ€œmany encounters with interesting and great peopleโ€ and has received โ€œmany special impressionsโ€ in connection to the ongoing conflict. โ€œI would like to say a heartfelt thank you for that,โ€ she adds.

โ€˜We are going to be sending people down to the surface, they are going to be living there on the surface and doing science,โ€™ Hu said.

African Nation Wants Major Investment From Russia

Russian businesses should actively invest in Angola's economy and its diplomatic mission in Moscow will support such initiatives in every possible way, the African countryโ€™s ambassador said on Tuesday.

Speaking to RIA Novosti news agency, Augusto da Silva Cunha said that Luanda is calling on the entrepreneurs to be more active as, so far, Russiaโ€™s business presence in Angola has been modest. He also pointed out that, after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, some Western nations have turned to Africa for resources, as some countries on the continent, including Angola, possess large oil and gas deposits.

"We want to motivate Russian businessmen to take advantage of Angolaโ€™s openness to foreign investment. We want them to participate in various projects to develop the country's economy, and to earn money as well," the ambassador...
