Mayor Urges Ukrainians To Stop Eating Traditional New Year Salads

Popular Olivier and Shuba salads, which are traditionally enjoyed during New Year celebrations in many former Soviet countries, should disappear from the tables of Ukrainians, Mayor of Dnepr Boris Filatov has said.

โ€œTo tell you the truth, I canโ€™t gobble those Olivier and Shuba [salads] anymore because itโ€™s the third dayโ€ of the new year already, he wrote on Telegram on Monday.

โ€œTherefore, there is a proposal. Letโ€™s gradually abandon those Soviet habits. And to be honest and frank: โ€˜Away with Moscow,โ€™โ€ Filatov added.

However, the mayor said he had no problem with another Russian dish โ€“ Kholodets or jellied meat โ€“ saying he would โ€œgive up his soulโ€ for it, especially when itโ€™s served with mustard.

Kevin McCarthy lost a vote to become House Speaker, after his own colleagues backed alternative candidates

California Rep. Kevin McCarthy has lost his bid to become speaker of the House of Representatives, after 19 of his GOP colleagues voted against him. Considered too moderate by these dissenting Republicans, McCarthy is the first party leader to lose a speakerโ€™s contest in 100 years.

McCarthy received 203 votes when Congress convened to choose a speaker on Tuesday, falling short of the 218 needed to secure a majority. With the Republicans holding a 222-213 seat majority in the House, McCarthy could have lost the votes of only four of hi...

Australia Defies Health Advice On Covid Tests For Chinese Arrivals

Australian opposition leader Peter Dutton has accused the government of ignoring medical advice on Covid-19 restrictions by forcing passengers arriving from China to undergo mandatory testing.

On Sunday, Canberra announced that starting from January 5, people traveling from China will have to test negative for Covid-19 within 48 hours prior to the trip. This appears to contradict the advice of Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly, who previously stated that he did not โ€œbelieve that there is sufficient public health rationale to impose any restriction or additional requirements on travelers from China.โ€

In a joint statement on Tuesday, Dutton and opposition health spokeswoman Anne Ruston urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to explain why he was not following this recommendation.
