Germany Sticks To Pledge On Russian Pipeline-Oil Imports
Germany stopped imports of Russian oil via pipelines on January 1 despite the fact that the latest EU embargo exempts piped deliveries of crude to the bloc from the sanctions-hit nation.
The EU embargo on imports of Russian sea-borne oil came into effect on December 5, but flows of pipeline oil to landlocked EU member states are excluded from the ban. Germany and Poland had previously pledged to avoid making use of the exception and stop imports of Russian crude via the Druzhba pipeline from the start of 2023.
The cessation of pipeline supplies is expected to affect major German refineries in Schwedt, in the state of Brandenburg and Leuna, and in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, which supply eastern Germany with fuel, German press agency DPA reports.

Russian UFC Star Announces Surprise Retirement
The prolific Russian lightweight fighter Damir Ismagulov has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts at the age of 31.
Ismagulov, who is ranked 12th in the UFC lightweight division, most recently fought for the UFC in Las Vegas on December 17 where he was defeated by the highly-rated Arman Tsarukyan in what was the first loss in the UFC and just the second of his career.
Prior to that, Ismagulov has won five straight fights in the UFC Octagon and an incredible 19 fights overall โ but in a message posted to Instagram on Sunday, he appeared to cite health concerns as the primary motivation for his decision to hang up his 4oz gloves.
โUnfortunately, due to circumstances and health problems, I have to end my sports career,โ Ismagulov wrote on Instagram, via translation.

High energy prices will become a new reality in Germany, Finance Minister Christian Lindner warned on Sunday.
In an interview with Bild newspaper, Lindner admitted that Berlin is facing the prospect of more expensive energy in the long term without Russiaโs natural gas.
โIt will be a new normal. Gas via the liquid gas terminals is more expensive than Russian pipeline gas for logistical reasons alone. So, the price level remains higher, but without ruinous spikes,โ he said.

In a series of posts on Instagram, Maritime and Mercantile International (MMI), one of the largest alcohol stores in the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, hailed the move as โBIG BIG NEWS.โ It explained that people โno longer need to make trips across the country to stock up on [their] favorite drinks.โ
