Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes has been challenged on social media after saying he will not be โ€œencouraging anyoneโ€ to take a Covid vaccine.

In an online tweet, the boxer claimed he had been asked by health officials to โ€œpromoteโ€ the vaccine and told his more than 100,000 followers people should โ€œget it if you mustโ€.

Barnes, who won bronze for Ireland at both the Beijing and London Olympic Games, was responding to a news report about an inquest into the death of BBC Radio Newcastle presenter Lisa Shaw.

Ms Shaw passed away at the age of 44 in May, with a coroner on Thursday concluding she died due to complications from the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

Nphet is past its sell-by date and has been treating the public like sheep, former minister and broadcaster Ivan Yates believes.

Mr Yates believes the country has been unnecessarily subjected to the most extreme lockdown in Europe for the past 18 months.

โ€œNphet is past its sell-by date. There is no need for such a large and unwieldy group. While they were on holidays, things got on fine,โ€ he told the Irish Examiner.

โ€œI am also very cynical that we are the only country that treats the public like sheep. They publish on a daily basis the number of cases, the number of hospitalisations, but because of some cyberattacks a number of months ago they canโ€™t publish the deaths. The truth is it is because the numbers are zero or close to zero and they donโ€™t want people to know the truth."
