On learning the value of negotiation from the Outlaw Josey Wales

W.J. ASTORE

Weโ€™re in a strange moment when advocating for negotiations toward peace in Ukraine is dismissed as not only wrongheaded but morally wrong.  Weโ€™re told that only Ukraine can determine its future, and that one must not appease a dictator (Putin), but in the same breath weโ€™re told that peace will only come when Russia is totally defeated by force of arms, with the main arms supplier being the United States.  Methinks various actors in the U.S. are evincing a conflict of interest here.  When war is profitable and you keep arguing for it, it doesnโ€™t take a detective to see motives that are suspect.

Even when itโ€™s necess...

New Chip Transmits Entire Internetโ€™s Traffic In Less Than A Second

Hard drives everywhere cried out in pain as scientists announced a breakthrough in network speed. The gigaboffins over at the Technical University of Denmark (which is, technically, a university in Denmark) have used a new kind of โ€˜photonic chipโ€™ to transmit data at a whopping 1.84 petabits per second, a record for a single chip, and nearly double the bandwidth of the entire internet. All this through just a tiny fiber optic cable.

Unlike other fiber optic transmission methods, this new chip splits the datastream into multiple colors, 37 to be exact, which themselves are then split again into 223 different frequencies of light. By carefully selecting the frequencies, the scientists were able to broadcast multiple chunks of data in parallel, achieving ludicrous speeds. The speed is so great that not even Hunter Bid...

Swiss claim record for worldโ€™s longest passenger train

A Swiss railway company claimed the record for the worldโ€™s longest passenger train. The Rhaetian Railway company ran the 1.9-kilometer-long train along the Albula/Bernina route from Preda to Berguen.

The Swiss train nearly 2 kilometers long composed of 100 coaches will thus enter the Guinness Book of Records as the longest passenger train โ€“ a bold move, especially amid the energy crisis on the continent, which drove up costs for rail companies.

The Swiss Federal Office of Transport has recently began adjusting the pricing model for railway electricity to allow for a fixed price for at least four years. The initiative was taken with SBB Energy, the rail electricity supplier for Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Furthermore, SBB has announced it will reduce heating in train coaches as part of measures to save gas and electricity....

Western nations should stop supplying Ukraine with weapons if they want a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict between Kiev and Moscow, Italyโ€™s former prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, told journalist Bruno Vespa over the weekend. According to Berlusconi, Zelensky would only agree to any sort of a deal with Moscow...
