NATO Chief Explains Why Russia Must Not Be Able To ‘Win’ In Ukraine

Ukraine because a Russian victory in the conflict would empower China, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said.

A victorious Russia would “be bad for all of us in Europe and North America, in the whole of NATO, because that will send a message to authoritarian leaders – not only Putin, but also China – that by the use of brutal military force, they can achieve their goals,” Stoltenberg said in an interview with Politico.

“[It’s] important for NATO allies to stand together and to address the consequences of the rise of China – and that we agree on, and that’s exactly what we are doing,” he pointed out, referring to Beijing being designated as a “challenge” to the bloc in summer.

Moscow & Kiev Reveal Details Of New Prisoner Swap

Moscow and Kiev have conducted a prisoner swap in which 50 Russian troops were released, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday.

The returned personnel will be airlifted to the Russian capital for medical treatment, the ministry said in a statement, adding that “their lives had been in danger during captivity.”

The acting head of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, wrote on his Telegram channel that the exchange was conducted on a ‘50-for-50’ basis.

EU Names Condition For Unblocking Russia’s Assets

The frozen assets of Russia’s Central Bank may be held as “a guarantee” until Moscow agrees to participate in Ukraine’s economic recovery, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said on Saturday. 

Western countries seized Russian assets as part of sweeping sanctions that were imposed on Moscow after it launched a military operation in the neighboring state in February.

“From my point of view, it is at least possible to keep these €300 billion ($299 billion) as a guarantee until Russia voluntarily participates in the reconstruction of Ukraine,” Reynders told German media.
