Kiev Preventing Kherson Residents From ReturningHome โ€” Washington Post

Ukrainian authorities are preventing some Kherson residents who fled the hostilities from returning home to the now-Russian city, the Washington Post discovered while speaking to refugees in the Kiev-controlled city of Zaporozhye.

Western media have claimed for months that Russia forcibly removed people from their homes in the region โ€“ accusations that Moscow denounced as false and cynical, citing the risk to life for people in the conflict zone.

NATO Chief Explains Why Russia Must Not Be Able To โ€˜Winโ€™ In Ukraine

Ukraine because a Russian victory in the conflict would empower China, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said.

A victorious Russia would โ€œbe bad for all of us in Europe and North America, in the whole of NATO, because that will send a message to authoritarian leaders โ€“ not only Putin, but also China โ€“ that by the use of brutal military force, they can achieve their goals,โ€ Stoltenberg said in an interview with Politico.

โ€œ[Itโ€™s] important for NATO allies to stand together and to address the consequences of the rise of China โ€“ and that we agree on, and thatโ€™s exactly what we are doing,โ€ he pointed out, referring to Beijing being designated as a โ€œchallengeโ€ to the bloc in summer.

EU Names Condition For Unblocking Russiaโ€™s Assets

The frozen assets of Russiaโ€™s Central Bank may be held as โ€œa guaranteeโ€ until Moscow agrees to participate in Ukraineโ€™s economic recovery, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said on Saturday.

Western countries seized Russian assets as part of sweeping sanctions that were imposed on Moscow after it launched a military operation in the neighboring state in February.

โ€œFrom my point of view, it is at least possible to keep these โ‚ฌ300 billion ($299 billion) as a guarantee until Russia voluntarily participates in the reconstruction of Ukraine,โ€ Reynders told German media.

Biden โ€˜Outragedโ€™ By Russiaโ€™s Move

US President Joe Biden has claimed there is absolutely โ€œno meritโ€ to Moscowโ€™s decision to halt the deal which allowed the export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea. Russia previously warned that the shipping route could be abused by smugglers, and put the agreement on hold on Saturday following a โ€œterrorist attackโ€ on vessels involved in ensuring the security of the corridor.

โ€œItโ€™s purely outrageousโ€ฆ Itโ€™s going to increase starvation,โ€ Biden told reporters in Delaware on Saturday. โ€œThereโ€™s no merit to what theyโ€™re doing. The UN negotiated that deal and that should be the end of it.โ€

Russia announced on Saturday that it has halted its compliance with the deal, brokered by the UN and Tรผrkiye earlier this year. The move came after Kiev launched a major drone attack on the Black Sea Fleet and civilian vessels involved in securing safe passage for...
