German Minister Defends Ukrainian Refugeesโ€™ Privileges

Germany should go on with a policy that automatically grants Ukrainian refugees a stay permit without the need to go through the asylum request processing, Labor and Social Affairs Minister Hubertus Heil said on Saturday.

The EU jointly decided in June that Ukrainians would not be required to go through the normal asylum procedures reserved for refugees from all other parts of the world.

โ€œPeople are fleeing a terrible war that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin instigated,โ€ Heil told the German Tagesspiegel daily, adding that โ€œthere is nothing to take backโ€ from them.

British MPs Demand Liz Truss Resign

A trio of Conservative MPs have called for Liz Truss to step down as prime minister as of Sunday night.

Crispin Blunt was the first to go public, declaring he did not think Truss could weather the current economic crisis, followed by Andrew Bridgen, who said โ€œour country, its people and our party deserve better.โ€

The third, Jamie Wallis of Bridgend and Porthcrawl, lamented that Truss had โ€œundermined Britainโ€™s economic credibility and fractured our party irreparably.โ€

Russia Responds To UN Officialโ€™s โ€˜Rapeโ€™ Claims

Claims made by the UN special representative on sexual violence, Pramila Patten, go โ€œbeyond the reach of reason,โ€ Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Sunday. Earlier this week, Patten accused Russia of employing a โ€œdeliberateโ€ rape โ€œstrategyโ€ as part of its military campaign in Ukraine.

โ€œOnce again, what we are seeing is a classic โ€˜highly likelyโ€™ [story], which has this time reached the level of twisted imagination,โ€ Zakharova said.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswomanโ€™s reaction was sparked by an interview Patten gave to AFP this week, in which she claimed that sexual violence is a โ€œdeliberate tacticโ€ and โ€œmilitary strategyโ€ of Russia, aimed at dehumanizing its โ€œvictims.โ€ She also claimed that Russian soldiers are โ€œequipped with Viagra.โ€

EU Nationโ€™s Facebook Likens Sanctions To Bomb

Hungary has issued a condemnation of EU sanctions against Russia, posting an image on its official government Facebook page likening the economic measures to a bomb and warning that Brusselsโ€™ financial warfare against Moscow will โ€œdestroyโ€ Budapest.

The graphic, which features a warhead emblazoned with the Hungarian word for โ€œsanctionsโ€ and the message โ€œBrussels sanctions will destroy us,โ€ was added on Saturday to accompany the governmentโ€™s latest national consultation survey, which asked citizens whether they agreed with Budapestโ€™s stated opposition to EU sanctions on Russia.

Beijing has become a more direct rival to the bloc due to its stance on the conflict in Ukraine, a news outlet reported

The European Union must embrace a tougher stance on China, as Beijing has come to pose a more significant challenge to the West partly due to its refusal to denounce Russia over the Ukraine conflict, the Financial Times reported on Monday citing a document drawn up by the blocโ€™s foreign service.

The ministerial paper, which advises EU countries on the overall China strategy, reportedly said that it โ€œhas become an even stronger global competitor for the EU, the USโ€ and their allies, adding that this development makes it necessary โ€œ...
