Country scraps funding for โ€˜imperialisticโ€™ Shakespeare festival
RT World News (RSS)

The works by the renowned playwright โ€œdidnโ€™t demonstrate the relevance to the contemporary art context,โ€ the art council ruled

New Zealandโ€™s arts council has pulled funding for a long-running Shakespeare festival, saying the works of the iconic British playwright were out of date and focused on โ€œa canon of imperialism.โ€

The annual Sheilah Winn Shakespeare festival has been around for some three decades, with over 120,000 high-school students from more than half of the island nationโ€™s secondary schools taking part in it over those years. The platform allows the youths to direct, perform and create sets, cost...

RT World News (RSS)

The Strasbourg Court defended a mock abortion โ€˜performanceโ€™ in a Paris church as โ€œfreedom of expressionโ€

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ordered France to pay almost โ‚ฌ10,000 to former FEMEN member Eloise Bouton for violating her right to โ€œfreedom of expression.โ€ The decision refers to the suspended prison sentence Bouton received for her 2013 topless โ€˜Jesus abortionโ€™ act in the Madeleine Church in Paris.

โ€œThe Court held that France was to pay the applicant 2,000 euros (EUR) in respect of non-pecuniary damage and EUR 7,800 in costs and expenses,โ€ the ECHR said earlier this week.

Explaining the decision, the...

The demonstrations took place amid rising inflation and fuel shortages

Massive crowds of protesters took to the streets of Paris on Sunday to voice discontent over the rising cost of living. It comes as the countryโ€™s largest trade union continues a refinery strike that has closed gas stations across the country.

The protest was organized by Jean-Luc Melenchon, a former presidential candidate and leader of the left-wing France Unbowed (LFI) party. A number of other leftist parties and organizations participated, with some calling on President Emmanuel Macron to take stronger action against climate change.

However, economic concerns are first...

A Republican lawmaker wants House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to probe Washingtonโ€™s alleged attempted coercion of Saudi Arabia

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should look into whether the White House pressured Saudi Arabia to delay OPEC+โ€™s promised oil production cut, Republican Tom Tiffany demanded in a letter to the congresswoman on Thursday.

The Saudi government had claimed earlier that day that the US government had requested a one-month delay in the 2 million barrels per day production cut announced earlier this month. Putting off the cut, it implied, would postpone the surge in energy prices expected to acc...
