Chinaโs President Xi Jinping, delivered a lengthy speech at the opening session of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party, in which he praised the partyโs success in defending national security and social stability โ and promised to advance the cause of reunification with Taiwan.
Xi emphasized that his โTaiwan compatriotsโ should not take it as a threat, explaining that the warning was โby no means targetedโ at them, but rather the โoutside forcesโ and the โfew separatists seeking Taiwan independence.โ
The Chinese leader encouraged โpeople on both sides of the Strait to work together to promote Chinese culture and forge closer bonds,โ adding that Beijing has โalways shown respect and care for our Taiwan compatriots and worked to deliver benefits to them.โ
