German Inflation Hits Post-Reunification High

Annual inflation in Germany has continued to rise from 8.8% in August to 10.9% in September. (Federal Statistical Office – Destatis)

The inflation rate has reached “an all-time high since German reunification,” Destatis President Georg Thiel said, citing “enormous price rises” for energy products, as well as food costs, as the main reasons for the high inflation.

The report indicated that consumer prices rose by 10.0% from a year earlier, with a particularly large price increase for household energy, while heating oil prices more than doubled and natural gas prices surged by 95.1%.

Nord Stream Saboteurs Plunged EU Into ‘Energy Poverty’ — Top Minister

The perpetrators behind the attacks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines have destroyed the European Union’s hope for a secure and sustainable energy supply, Deputy Prime Minister Aleksander Novak has said on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week forum.

“Those who had plotted and perpetrated this terrorist act have basically plunged Europe into an energy poverty, so to speak,” Novak said , adding that the sabotage of the pipelines has all but “nullified the energy security” the EU has long sought to achieve.

The former energy minister previously said Russia is still able to supply natural gas to the European Union through a string of Nord Stream 2 that remains intact.

European Auto Industry In Trouble — S&P

With energy prices in EU skyrocketing, a harsh winter could shut down production in parts of the automotive sector, S&P Global Mobility reported.

According to a report titled “Winter is Coming,” the “combined black swan events” of the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have stretched automotive supply lines, especially with regard to semiconductors.

Sweden Explains Rejection Of Join Nord Stream Probe

Stockholm has rejected a plan to set up an official joint investigation team together with Germany and Denmark to look into the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in late September, Reuters reported, citing a Swedish investigator. Sweden reportedly argued that its own findings are too sensitive to share even with other EU nations.

The EU’s agency for criminal justice cooperation, Eurojust, recently came up with a proposal to establish a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to launch a probe into the Nord Stream explosions, Reuters said, adding that Sweden blocked the initiative.

On Friday, Mats Ljungqvist, a Swedish prosecutor involved in the nation’s probe into the incident, told the news agency that this development would impose unwanted obligations on his nation.
