German Airport's Chinese Scanner Purchase Prompts Security Fears
Baggage-scanning equipment made by Chinese company Nuctech has flustered European MEPs, worried about "dependency on a state-owned enterprise which is bound byโฆChinese intelligence law." (Reuters)
"Nuctech's rapid development raises concerns about the risks of adopting Chinese technology in our border security systems," Bart Groothuis, Nathalie Loiseau and Reinhard Bรผtikofer wrote in a letter to a Strasbourg representative.
Nuctech's X-ray scanning and sensors for ports and airports was previously blacklisted by the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security, Commerce. The company did not respond for comment on the letter.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Warns Of Major Drop in US Stock Market
The US stock market will drop another 30% due to a severe recession that is looming, according to the boss of Wall Street banking giant JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, as cited by Bloomberg.
Dimon expects the Federal Reserve to raise the key interest rate higher than the 4 - 4.5% level many analysts have predicted so far, due to persisting inflation stemming from the lasting effects of the pandemic and soaring energy prices.
โI donโt know if it could be a soft landing - I donโt think so, but it might,โ Dimon said at a conference in Washington DC on Thursday, according to the agency. โIn a tough recession, you could expect the market to go down another 20% to 30%,โ he added.

German Inflation Hits Post-Reunification High
Annual inflation in Germany has continued to rise from 8.8% in August to 10.9% in September. (Federal Statistical Office โ Destatis)
The inflation rate has reached โan all-time high since German reunification,โ Destatis President Georg Thiel said, citing โenormous price risesโ for energy products, as well as food costs, as the main reasons for the high inflation.
The report indicated that consumer prices rose by 10.0% from a year earlier, with a particularly large price increase for household energy, while heating oil prices more than doubled and natural gas prices surged by 95.1%.

Nord Stream Saboteurs Plunged EU Into โEnergy Povertyโ โ Top Minister
The perpetrators behind the attacks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines have destroyed the European Unionโs hope for a secure and sustainable energy supply, Deputy Prime Minister Aleksander Novak has said on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week forum.
โThose who had plotted and perpetrated this terrorist act have basically plunged Europe into an energy poverty, so to speak,โ Novak said , adding that the sabotage of the pipelines has all but โnullified the energy securityโ the EU has long sought to achieve.
The former energy minister previously said Russia is still able to supply natural gas to the European Union through a string of Nord Stream 2 that remains intact.
