❗️Russia Halts Gas Supplies To Italy - Gazprom

Russia’s Gazprom has informed energy company Eni that it will not be able to supply gas to the country on Saturday, due to the “impossibility of transporting it” through Austria, the Italian firm said in a statement.

“Gazprom said it could not confirm the volumes of gas requested to date because of the stated impossibility of transporting gas through Austria. Therefore, today the flow of Russian gas destined for Eni through the Tarvisio crossing will be at zero,” the statement from Eni said, as cited by news agency RIA Novosti.

Eni has said it will provide further information “if supplies are resumed.”

Zelensky Sets Conditions For Talks With Russia

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has refused to negotiate a peace settlement as long as Vladimir Putin remains president of Russia, issuing a regime change demand via his official Telegram channel on Friday.

Claiming he had “always offered Russia coexistence on equal, honest, dignified and fair terms,” Zelensky blamed Russia for the failure of negotiations, insisting that it was “obvious this is impossible with this Russian president.” 

“We are ready for a dialogue with Russia, but … with another president of Russia,” he wrote. Unlike the majority of his Telegram posts, this one was written only in Ukrainian, without an accompanying English translation.

❗️Russian Forces Withdraw From Key Donbass City – MoD

Russian troops as well as Donbass militias have had to withdraw from their defensive positions in the city of Krasny Liman as Kiev mounted a large-scale offensive targeting the area, the Defense Ministry confirmed on Saturday.

Earlier, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic called the situation in the city “alarming” saying it had been “half-encircled” by Ukrainian troops.

“Due to the emerging threat of encirclement, allied troops have withdrawn from the settlement of Krasny Liman and deployed to more advantageous positions,” the MoD’s statement said.

Ukrainian forces reportedly lost more than 200 soldiers as well as five tanks and five infantry fighting vehicles during the attack, the military added.

West African Country’s Junta Ousted In Coup

A faction of the Burkina Faso military claimed power in Ouagadougou on Friday, in the second coup d’etat in the West African country since the start of 2022.

Captain Ibrahim Traore has replaced Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba at the head of the military junta, citing his failure to deal with an Islamist militant insurgency.

“Faced with the deteriorating situation, we tried several times to get Damiba to refocus the transition on the security question,” Traore said in a statement he read on national television.

US Avoids Shutdown of ‘Critical’ Ukraine Aid Flow

US President Joe Biden has signed a temporary spending bill into law, avoiding a federal government shutdown until mid-December. The stopgap funding bill, however, is largely focused on keeping the flow of military and other aid to Kiev uninterrupted.

The House passed the bill 230-201 on Friday in a largely party-line vote, barring 10 Republicans who joined Democrats in backing the legislation. Biden signed the bill ahead of a midnight deadline.

While the temporary spending package will provide funding until December 16, the House and Senate will be forced to come up with a new bill to cover costs for the next year after returning from break following the midterm elections in November.

EU energy officials are concerned about the effects the ongoing energy crisis in Europe will have on the continent once cold weather sets in, Commissioner Kadri Simson told journalists on Friday.

“Ministers were concerned, as am I, that this will not be an easy winter for us, and the next winter will be even more difficult,” said Simson during a press conference after an extraordinary meeting of EU energy ministers.

The meeting was meant to address the skyrocketing gas prices in Europe and to develop a package of emergency measures aimed at assisting European households and businesses amid the crisis

Olympics Chief Reveals Conditions For Russians To Return To International Sports

Russian athletes that don’t support the country’s military operation in Ukraine might be accepted back into the global sports community, according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

Russian teams, clubs, and athletes have been suspended from taking part in most sporting events since the IOC made the recommendation to a number of sports federations in late February.

Russians have already missed some qualifying events for the Paris Olympics in 2024, and Bach said in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that the IOC needs “to think about the future.”
