Hurricane Ian Regains Strength, Heads for Carolinas after Hitting Florida

After ravaging Florida, a strengthened Hurricane Ian is set to enter South and North Carolina where National Guard troops have been deployed in anticipation. 

The National Hurricane Center’s update forecast a “life-threatening storm surge” including a storm surge of up to 7 feet (2.1m) into coastal areas of the Carolinas, and rainfall of up to 8 inches (20cm).

In Florida, the calamity caused massive damage to buildings, vehicles and even swept local civilian boats ashore. At least 19 people are reported to have died due to Ian's rampage through the Caribbean and the US.

Stoltenberg: “We can't grant Ukraine membership to the alliance now”

Despite Kiev’s application for a fast-track membership to NATO, General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg said Friday that Ukraine can’t join the alliance yet, as it is down to all 30 members deciding unanimously.

Stoltenberg also slammed the “annexation of Ukrainian territory”, insisting that NATO is not part of the conflict but protects its allies and every inch of their territory,

He also urged Russia to end the conflict, labeling it as the aggressor.

23 Dead after Kabul Suicide Bomb Blast

At least 23 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack at an education center in a Shi'ite minority area of Kabul Friday, and 36 more were injured, reports CNN.

Most of the victims are believed to be young women, with students taking university entrance exams apparently targeted. 

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The image will begin to appear on 50p coins that will enter circulation around December, the Royal Mint has announced.

It will also be releasing a memorial coin commemorating the life of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.

The king’s portrait - created by sculptor Martin Jennings and approved by Charles himself - will face left, keeping in tradition with the custom of the monarch facing opposite of their predecessor.

US Senate Avoids Government Shutdown, Approves Further Ukraine Aid

The United States Senate passed a short-term spending bill that would prevent a partial government shutdown when the current fiscal year ends at midnight Friday.

The bill also included about $12.3 billion in aid for Ukraine.

US legislators are now expected to adopt a larger government spending package after the midterm election in November, which is largely expected to shift political winds to one of the major parties’ direction.
