Just a day after North Korea launched a retaliatory short-range ballistic missile, US and South Korean warships began their first joint exercises off the Korean peninsula in five years on Monday.
Seoulโs navy claimed the exercises, which involve over 20 ships, as well as fighter jets and helicopters, were designed to show both countriesโ โpowerful resolve to respond to North Korean provocations.โ
Pyongyang has conducted a record number of missile tests this year, as well as passing a law allowing preemptive nuclear action in certain situations.
