Nationalist Giorgia Meloni Set to Lead Italy After Sunday Election Win

Giorgia Meloni is likely to become Italyโ€™s first female prime minister after her nationalist coalition swept to victory in Sundayโ€™s elections according to all-but final results - despite center-left parties garnering more votes.

Italian electoral rules benefit coalitions formed pre-ballot. The Meloni-led bloc includes former PM Silvio Berlusconiโ€™s Forza Italia party and previous leading nationalist group League to create around 44% of the votes - just short of the estimated combined votes for the center-left/centrist Democratic Party, 5-star Movement and Action parties.

Meloni has forged alliances with nationalist parties from Spain, Poland, Hungary and Sweden, building on a drive for stricter immigration laws and protection of traditional family values.
