Nationalist Giorgia Meloni Set to Lead Italy After Sunday Election Win

Giorgia Meloni is likely to become Italy’s first female prime minister after her nationalist coalition swept to victory in Sunday’s elections according to all-but final results - despite center-left parties garnering more votes.

Italian electoral rules benefit coalitions formed pre-ballot. The Meloni-led bloc includes former PM Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party and previous leading nationalist group League to create around 44% of the votes - just short of the estimated combined votes for the center-left/centrist Democratic Party, 5-star Movement and Action parties.

Meloni has forged alliances with nationalist parties from Spain, Poland, Hungary and Sweden, building on a drive for stricter immigration laws and protection of traditional family values.
