Argentinian DNA: The Fracture

'These people were kept at military and police facilities. Many were tortured and murdered in cold blood. They were burnt or thrown out of planes alive.' The team of anthropologist Luis Fondebrider finds the remains of the missing in 1976-1983.

During this period, Argentina was under the rule of a military dictatorship. It's still spoken of as one of the most tragic periods in the history of the country. According to various estimates, from 9,000 to 30,000 went missing during this period. The children of the detained oppositionists were taken away and given to other people.

For many years, hundreds of mothers and grandmothers have been coming to the central square of Buenos Aires once a week with photos of stolen children. They hope someday they will return home. This is one of the episodes of our series Argentinian DNA (2019). We post it on the Day of the Political Rights of Argentine Women.

The head of the US-led military bloc vowed to step up aid to Kiev, suggesting Western arms are the only way to resolve the conflict

US: Sexually Transmitted Diseases โ€˜Out of Controlโ€™ โ€“ officials

US health officials have called for new prevention and treatment efforts as the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases, which include gonorrhea and syphilis, has been skyrocketing over the last few years.

Speaking at a medical conference earlier this week, Dr. Leandro Mena of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that it was โ€œimperativeโ€ that the US work to โ€œrebuild, innovate, and expandโ€ STD prevention. This comes as the rate of syphilis infections last year reached a 20-year high, and the number of new infections shot up 26%, beating a record set in 1948.

The head of the National Coalition of STD Directors, David Harvey, whose group is pushing a proposal for at least $500 million in federal funding to be earmarked for STD clinics, has described the situation as โ€œout of control.โ€

Ron Wyden has demanded a probe into the warrantless use of data from a near-omniscient company

Multiple branches of the US military have bought access to โ€œpetabytesโ€ of American citizensโ€™ private internet use data via a tool called Augury, giving them access to an almost omniscient set of data points, including an individualโ€™s email communications, browsing history, and other behaviorally identifying information, all on demand and without a warrant, Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) claimed in a letter to the Office of the Inspector General on Wednesday.
