Professor Luke O’Neill has said that Ireland should hold off from vaccinating children under 12 years of age for now.

The Trinity College Dublin lecturer believes that this age cohort should not be vaccinated until more vaccines are administered in developing countries.

It comes amid concerns that the Lambda variant of Covid-19, which originated in Peru, may be resistant to vaccines.

However, Professor O’Neill told The Pat Kenny Show that it is “unlikely” that any variant would render vaccinations completely useless.

Bryson DeChambeau missed out on the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19 on July 23, but the professional golfer said that he doesn’t regret not getting the vaccine.

"The vaccine doesn't necessarily prevent it from happening," DeChambeau told reporters at TPC Southwind on Wednesday, via ESPN. "I'm young enough, I'd rather give it (the vaccine) to people who need it. I don't need it. I'm a healthy, young individual that will continue to work on my health."

DeChambeau, who is 27 years old, said that his father and mother both received the vaccine. He added that he didn’t want to take it because he didn’t want to reduce the available supply for people who needed it.

Nightclubs are set to encouraging young people to get a COVID-19 jab, with one being used as a vaccine centre.

Leading figures at venues including the Ministry of Sound have joined the government's national effort to get young people jabbed.

The industry is supporting the drive by sharing the vaccine message online and at venues, while London-based club Heaven is hosting a pop-up vaccination centre on 8 August.

At the same time the government will launch a billboard and social media campaign aiming to convince under-30s to get the vaccine and according to The Times, it will run adverts online telling young people to get the jab or "miss out on the good times", when the vaccine passports are introduced in the autumn.
